Links to ODP or to its mirrors?
by Guest Zigga-

I run several websites covering quite different themes. As keeping links up to date is quite a pain I usually have not created link lists myself but just created links to relevant ODP categories. But ODP often is so slooooooooooow. And sometimes it doesn't work at all. Now I found that there also are mirrors. http://ch.dmoz.org/ seems not to be complete (Regional/, Science/, Computers/ and many other categories do not work) but http://de.dmoz.org/ , on the other hand, seems to be much better. And so fast. So, if I change all my http://dmoz.org/Something/ links to http://de.dmoz.org/Something/ can I trust that they will work in the future? And can I be sure that the …

I tried to download the RDF dump via http://rdf.dmoz.org/ but that page produces a 500 error in my IE browser. Does this subdomain still exists or can I find the RDF dump on another location?

Creating static HTML from a small portion of RDF
by Guest Andrew111-

My site covers a topic that has it's own small category in the ODP, so I wanted to add that part of the RDF dump to my site. The problem is that I can't find a free tool to help me create static HTML from part of the RDF dump. I found PLENTY of tools that will incorporate a live feed from the ODP, but the ODP doesn't need another site leeching their much needed bandwidth. I imagine it would be best for me to parse the RDF data I want into a mySQL database...I really need suggestions on a free tool that can help me do this. Thanks in advance for any help.

This is the news you've all been waiting for - we've finally been able to generate an RDF dump. The data is a week out of date, and does not include any catids, as most of the problems relating to the RDF generation have been to do with duplicate catids. This will be fixed in later dumps. You can download the files from this new URL: http://rdf.dmoz.org/ . Please bear in mind that demand may be high initially, so your downloads may be slow.

Parsing ODP RDF data as XML
by Guest slovenac- 1 reply

I am trying to parse the ODP data to make some use of it. I downloaded all fo it from the "old" page dmoz.org/rdf/. It seems to be bad xml, when I try to parse i get this: <pre><font class="small">code:</font><hr> Fatal Error at file E:\DMOZ RDF\structure.rdf.u8, line 221251, char 2 Message: Invalid character (Unicode: 0x1) </pre><hr> It seems the strange language encodings (chinese) making problems. Am i doing something wrong, or is it not me. I would apritiate if anyone expirienced would comment on the way they parse the data, which parsers they use, and how they structure their databases. Search banned from dmoz

Hello, 2 days ago we changed our domain name from ez2www.com to ez2find.com, since then I am not able to perform a search in the dmoz directory. The same script from another server works fine, meaning that our site is banned from searching. I am aware that the problem could be from the attribution or a huge traffic. We have the attribution in all pages and we are not altavista. Could someone tell me what is the problem? Since I am looking for a database solution, does anyone know about a tool to parse the rdf dump and put it into a mysql database?

Hello. First let me say thank you for all the hard work that you do. I've been using DMOZ data on my site (see my profile) with full attribution for over a year now. Today, all my connections to dmoz.org get 403's. I didn't receive an email and I have no idea why I was banned. I've been operating well within the license agreement. Could somebody please help? Thank you in advance.

Download problems: XML expansion or looping
by Guest hughprior-

I am trying to download the DMOZ structure file (from http://dmoz.org/rdf/), but I get either: [*]Browser (MS IE 6.0) opening the file as XML when I just click on the file - this pretty much hangs the system, as it tries to load up more and more of the giant 'page' [*]The download seeming to download forever, if I right-click on the file and do "Save target as...". It says it is downloading X of 36.7 Mb, but then when it gets to 36.7 Mb, it says, say, 1 second left, continues to 'download' whilst saying downloading, say, 40.2 Mb of 40.2 Mb, then so on ever upwards! [/list:u] Any help would be appreciated!

Downloading OPD data using Frontpage..
by Guest -- 1 reply

Another newby with lots of questions - I am wanting to setup a specific directory / vertical, and have found that Frontpge is able to , with relative ease, download smaller categories with relative ease. Now this idea works for me cause I am not terribly technical. The idea would be to download the small category, and sub-categories, and then rehash/makeover the site completely to fit my use... My big questions is that is this OK?, I am certainly not going to attempt it if it contravenese any rules, copywrites or otherwise - I look forward to any reply!

I only took a quick look at the FAQ and couldn't find an answer, but even if this is a common thing I thought I should mention it. I just got an email from a company wanting to charge me for a listing in their directory. Their "directory" (as of now) is the ODP dump. They even have the ODP thingee at the bottom of the page. Is this allowed?

cd-rom with complete OPD

Many libraries would be interested in a cd-rom (or a cd-rom collection) with a copy of the OPD. Would this cd-rom be available anywhere? Is it allowed to publish the complete OPD for offline-browsing?

Text-only ODP link?
by Guest --

I am attempting to start a new volunteer online project with nowhere near the scope of the ODP. One of the things I will have listed on some of the pages will be text only links to various sites I have found useful. At a higher level than the individual links, I want to list links to different online databases and naturally thought of the ODP first. Would there be any problem with having a text-only link to the ODP Computer tree? If not, what is the preferred URL? If so, what would be the proper procedure to list just a link and not the actual information? The site is located at: PCTalk

Using ODP Cat Structure

Hello folks, I have heard about the "attribution" in regards to using ODP data, no doubt this helps Google flag all those dupes <img src="/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" /> I was wondering what the situation would be in regards to using the DMOZ cat structure. What I had in mind is to use the structure from one 2nd tier category downwards. (science/biology) I'm not 100% wanting to use it purely because of its structure "as is"....but also to help rank sites within a search by taking the categories and the category titles into context, alongside things like link pop from sites in similar categories etc. Can someone please help clarify what the ODP stan…
