My site: <url removed> Was dropped from: https://dmoztools.net/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Hosting/Free/Directories/ After days of research I came to the conclusion that is was probably dropped as a result of not giving proper attribution to the Open Directory Project for using ODP data in a section of my site located here: <removed>/resources I since have added the "required credits" as explained here: https://dmoztools.net/become_an_editor/ I currently comply with all ODP requirements and guidelines. I was wondering if you could lift my ban, if any, and give me a status on my resubmission. Thank you for your time.

My page, MiraclePoint, appeared in MSN Search from fall 2002, (upon acceptance by dmoz), till fall 2003. Could be found by keying in the word "miracles". Page always showed among the top 14 spots. Now, can't locate it anywhere. Have emailed MSN Search 4 times. Last they said, 6 mos ago, was they were sending the problem to their 'special investigations unit'. Is dmoz no longer associated with MSN Search? http://miracles.port5.com

Hi, I am a relative newbie with ODP and would like to incorporate the full directory into my website. I would also like to customize the look and feel of the data, and perhaps add some additional attributes. Can someone help with the pros/cons of the different ways of creating/maintaining the data? There seems to be 3 schools of thought: 1) Import the data into a mysql db 2) Create html pages from the data 3) Incorporate a live feed from ODP Can each of these methods allow for customized look and feel? Any help is appreciated, Nici

Found out from lufiaguy (editor for News/Alternative) when trying to move categories that morons.org had its link nuked from News/Magazines_and_Ezines/Ezines because of a failed experiment with ODP data that was missing attribution and that we neglected to remove when it was clear we weren't going anywhere with it. Apologies for that. The offending data that lacked a citation has been removed from http://web.morons.org/directory/ and will not return (or at least not without proper attribution should we decide to try a similar experiment in the future). Again, sorry for that slip-up. No harm was intended. 'Twas an oversight which I hope I have now corrected to ever…

I just downloaded the odp rdf's and imported them into my local MySQL .. The result is 1.7GB less disk space and the whole directory in my own db Anyhow, how does dmoz.org use this data? (when browsing, searching, etc.) For example, the SQL query: select*from content_links WHERE topic LIKE('%java%'); resulted in: 4871 rows in set (2 min 27.29 sec) .. of course, this isn't a *real* example, since we would most likely use LIMIT 0,10, etc. to only show the ten first. But still - does anyone know how the ODP uses this data? Any articles or 'inside info' on the subject?

Apologizing if this is unappropriate or already been discussed in depths: having to paste the code presented at http://dmoz.org/become_an_editor/ to a site using a php script to fetch ODP data, is it possible to "rewrite" this HTML code in valid xhtml 1.0 (don't know yet if transitional or strict) one with appropriate usage of css, preserving the visual aspect and links present, or this would be unappropriate? Would it be ok to contribute this code, if we are allowed to develop it and we go for it, back to the community? In case it's ok, how should we proceed? Thanks and greets from Italy! - Jak

Hi all I have made a script that uses ODP data from the Thumbshots site. I was just wondering if the 'Thumbshots.org Sponsors' portion of the data had to be included in any output I use? (I will post an example if required) I have all the correct attributation at the bottom, with the 'category submission' and 'editor application' portion going directly to DMOZ to the correct category, I also have a 'Thumshots' Banner at the bottom of the page to fit with their licence. Thanks Barry

I can't find a program that actually works to parse odp dumps. I don't want to search dmoz in real time but to create my own sql database. I couldn't get anything useful in http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Directories/Open_Directory_Project/Use_of_ODP_Data/Upload_Tools Does anybody know how to export the results to a sql database?

I'm considering creating a new site based on ODP data which will enable users to submit new sites. So, I'm thinking of importing the odp data into my own db, and then add more sites as I go. I'm thinking of using phpODP as the engine, and of course the thumbnails will come from thumbshots. Of course, all parties will be attributed properly.

I have no objecttion to complying with the licence in principle but in practice this can be quite hard to do. For example if you are using the Mozilla outliner then there is no html to display the attribution . (unless this means adding it to the page which it viewed - and this would probably infringe the page owner's copyright!) Is there a someone in ODP who can authorise alternative wording which will comply with the intent of the licence?

Is there a site that will allow me to to request something like ... www.dmoz.org?categories="top:arts:movies" I dont want an entire ODP -just the IMMEDIATE child categories ps have added top as a category so that I can request top level categories www.dmoz.org?categories="top"

I'm attempting to parse the rdf dumps but I'm running into illegal UTF-8 characters. Is anything being done to correct this? What workarounds are possible to get an xml parser to work with this? I read the Errata and saw the filtering change done on 2003-03-12, but apparently something is not working quite right today because even the link provided in that update reports an overwhelming number of UTF-8 errors. http://rodan.ncc.com/rdf/ I'm using the Python XML libraries to parse the files and I can't keep it from throwing exceptions. Expat's test utilities throw errors as well. Could someone who is currently parsing these files share a bit of wisdom? T…

Hi! I would like to contribute at domz but I have a question regarding the license: May I use the links I add to a category at another site under a different license (for example Creative Commons), too? Obviosly you can use everything under the dmoz license but as long as I collected the links I am free to do what I want with them, am I not? I would like to contribute with all the good links I collect and I do not want to copy anything of dmoz without license but I also do not want lost the right to do with whatever I might want with my bookmarks. Thanks a lot :-)

I'm importing the DMOZ category table into my own database, and I'm munging the names. So I have the original IDs but not the original category names. Is there a DMOZ link I can use to pass a category ID instead of the name, for the attribution? I could add a lookup table, but that's like another hundred megabytes in my DB, considering I'd have to index it.
