Hi, Hope this is the right place to post this :-) It seems that Dmoz has some serious problems with the search function. If you try to make a search, you get a time out, and "cannot find server". I have tried the last few days, but same result every time.

While perusing all of the elements of becoming an editor for ODP, it occurred to me that it would be so much simpler if all this information was available in a downloadable PDF format. At least, that would be ideal for me. Just an idea. Thanks. Penny White

Wrote webmaster@dmoz.org an info about this problem but the mailbox seems to be full. Here is the mail: However I had problems applying before. At least when I applied for becoming an editor in March I didn't get any answer. Now after a couple of tries today and after reconnecting it seems to work. Anyway I though someone maybe would want to know about that problem. It seems the e-mail that I have send to webmaster@dmoz.org has been redicted to an aol address witch probably is private so I won't post it here and give it out on request. Hello Will it be possible that some editor take contact with the webmaster or the forum admin for request him that, through the file robots.txt, restrict Googlebot's access to this forum? When I look for my websites or other similar ones in Google, it appears next to the results this forum and my fits of anger I hope they take this in consideration as long as these discussions are more private.

Sometimes posts are deleted in r-z. Well, I assume that is what has happened: I reply to a thread, my post appears there, and later is gone. There are many possible reasons for this: the post is inappropriate (I hope rare in my case); someone else soon followed with a better post; the meta hates me (who can tell!); or some other conspiracy (but am I paranoid enough?). So please could the meta's delete-this-useless-post button acquire, somewhere, somehow, a -and-PM-the-submitter option. Not knowing how the meta's controls work, I can't make a more specific suggestion. But it would be helpful to be told where and why my post went. Thanks.

Hi, I am trying to submit my sites to related categories but I am always getting an error page. I fill the requested parts then click the "submit" button, then the page starts to load but it lasts 10-15 minutes, then I get a "Page can not be displayed" message.I tried several times, always same. I am using IE 6.0.2900 with SP2 installed WinXP. Please let me know what can I do about this situation, what am I doing wrong? Thanks for your time. Best Regards,

I have submitted maybe two dozen sites. Some are in now in ODP at some later date either because of my contribution or maybe someone elses. The majority are not afer weeks, months maybe years who know. It feels like submitting a site is just like sending it into a black hole. I have no idea if people are looking at it, if it is getting rejected or why. I think ODP would get a lot better contributions if there was some sort of feedback loop to let people know if their contributions are being looked at and if they are getting rejected why. I for one would submit a lot more if I didn't think the effort was entirely wasted. I also think that if people are submitting si…

i had an idea that i thought was cool to implement... It's like this ...... while the directory itself has some great sites listed and is quite comprehensive, the front end interface is kind of what I'd call Web 1.0-ish.... One could perhaps make it even more useful by introducing services such as click-to-call (VOIP-based) for companies that are listed in some categories.... Of course, this kind of a thing would not apply to a vast majority of websites... but well..... innovation starts "somewhere"... and one could then perhaps thing of other things as well that could perhaps be applied site-wide. The reason why I say this is because the way the ODP stand…

It appears that the site submission service is requested hundreds of time a day. It also appears that the Editors and Metas spend hours answering the same question over and over again? Why dont your engineers design something that AUTOMATICALLY gives that information? A simple implication 'could' be this: When suggesting a site, a reference number could be given, (similar to the abuse form). This reference number could then be used to track whether or not the site has indeed been looked at. In the perfect world, it would be lovley if there was a reason for rejection, and not the standard 'cop-out' of reading the FAQ. I know that I have read them loads of tim…

Hi, I have noticed that on most search engines my website is also being shown as a website using "/" as the prefix and not the .com - .net or so on as it should be. I have also noticed that many links that are listed for instince under google using the "/" as my prefix are websites that have some tipe of DMOZ information on them. (Not All Directly Though) Any Ideas on why this would happen and even why there are listings being shown as, http://www.palmtreeamerica/ Just Asking

Hi all, I added a site to a category earlier today, and had no problems with it. The site is a blog, and it also has an RSS 2.0 feed. So, I also tried to add that XML feed to the same category. When I did, I made sure that I filled out all entries on the form carefully, and I chose the proper file format. After pressing the button to submit the feed, I received a message that the file wasn't validated correctly. The message also included a link to a feed validator. It told me to get the feed validating correctly, and then try again after I do. I checked my RSS feed with the feed validator, and it validated fine. I haven't included any URLs or catego…

I think the status you can get from your site submission is the worst ever. I mean if I ask for status of my submitted page 1 month after I have submitted then I can't ask again for another 6 months. Also having no queuing system make this whole directory very corrupted. "Hey my friend is and editor for that category, I can get your site listed right away" While others can wait for many months. Who is working for a better directory and not only for the power to choose?

The report spam/abuse link in DMOZ isn't working. Is there another method to report this information or should I just keep checking back? Any idea on how long it will take to get fixed? Thanks

At the bottom right hand corner of every RZ page, there is a link to Privacy Statement. It just points to the RZ forum. Does this mean that the members should not expect any privacy of their member data and public profile?

Basically, I used the form and it sent it to my old email address. Now that my email address has been updated, I needed to use the form, but it said that I used it recently so it won't send it to the new address. It's been 24 hours hours so I wanted to know how long until the form or script that runs the resets will let me do it again. ?

This could be made easier. I imagine that many of the abuse problems are multiple submissions of the same site and/or site varients. When you fill in the form, there is a problem with only having one field for inputting the category in which there is an issue. If the listings occur across different categories, then extra fields would be useful. Also, the form asks you for the category. When you copy and paste this from the directory, it doesnt work. Perhaps this could be looked at? Just thought I'd mention it... ;0)

I need to remove the word "Australian" from the description DMOZ has for my web site. I've checked on this page: http://dmoz.org/help/update.html#update and the advice is to "Simply go to the category which your site is listed, and click the "update URL" link at the top". When I go to the page where my site is listed there is no "udate URL" at the top. Does anyone have any suggestions please? Jean

I see lines like "Last update: 7:48 PT, Tuesday, May 17, 2005 " at the bottom of each category web page on http://www.dmoz.org... what does this mean? Is this the last time the web page itself was updated, or the last time a website was added to that category? In other words (taking the date I pasted above as an example) is it possible that websites could have been added to this category since May 17th but they are just not displayed yet? I read on a page somewhere that the search engine itself is updated independently of the categories, but I'm not sure if that is related to my question here. Thanks for any insight anyone can provide!
