An Englishman in Manhattan is seeking a quality pork pie, made in the English style. Surely somewhere in this un-sceptred isle there is a proper pork pie. Please? (I made a similar request earlier, but the thread seems to have disappeared. Perhaps I posted it to the wrong place: if it should resurface, please take appropriate action — that being telling me two places where one can buy a pork pie.)

...I submitted a client's site to ODP back in November or December, and I can't remember exactly which category I put them in. <img src="/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" /> They're a business consultant, who's running a forum to discuss the consulting industry. Is there any way I can find out where they were submitted so I can find out the status?

I read dozens of threads about the relevancy of the work we do here (good & bad) and just thought this might shed some perspective on and provide some context around what is happening. http://www.oreillynet.com/lpt/a/6228 In the "...'90s notion that the web was about publishing, not participation; that advertisers, not consumers, ought to call the shots; that size mattered, and that the internet was increasingly being dominated by the top websites as measured by MediaMetrix and other web ad scoring companies." The Architecture of Participation Some systems are designed to encourage participation. In his paper, The Cornucopia of the Commons, Dan Bricklin no…

OK, this option seems to be dead for now, so what else can I do to submit my little site dedicated to insurance in texas? I am also looking for individuals who would constructively criticize the site so I can improve it. Please do not just email or post to dump negativity, constructive is the key word here. I've already done the sitemap and robots.txt thing at google. Where else can I go? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated as my small business is competing against a well known lizard (we are talking insurance industry, not derogatorily) and others. I was depending on dmoz. Our products are very competitive, but getting the word out any way we can would help. Than…

How heavily does Google rely on DMOZ listings (if at all) on whether or not they list a site? Some background: I did a search for our company name and came up with 73 hits, not one of which was one of our pages. I submitted our URL to Google again with that info as a note and 3 Googlebots were spidering our site within a couple of hours. From reading about the DMOZ Google update posts, I'm guessing I won't know if they've decided to include the site until mid-month. Or will our site not being in DMOZ prevent inclusion? I've got the idea that there's no 'formal' policy, but that's the 'net legend' going around. Can someone slay this rumor again please…

I just noticed the forums must have been indexed by Google. I have not searched for them but I noticed it on my Google Toolbar. Page rank is low but that's probably due to the way Googles been acting during this update. Dave S.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, dmoz answer to everything? Is dmoz the real driving force behind Google or can you get Google rankings without it? Just asking.

Despite the bad publicity DMOZ gets, I have always admired the integrity and professionalism of its dedicated editors. With the mushrooming of 1000's of so called 'directories', I've realised over a period of time that directories today are perceived only as a means of SEO - either a 'relevant' link or a 'factor' in Google's or Yahoo's search algorithm (as in the case of ODP). I wish to create a more 'usable' directory that isn't perceived solely as such. The problem is, I do not know anything 'technical' about a web directory. I am hoping some of the experienced editors can advice me - 1) How do you create the directory structure? The directory idea I have plac…

Hello, have any of you looked outside at night and seen this? It has been seen as far south as Kentucky, which is rare! I saw it the other night, the first time in 20 years, the first time ever with color! http://spaceweather.com/aurora/images2004/07nov04g/Jung1.jpg http://spaceweather.com/aurora/images2004/07nov04g/Cantin.jpg http://spaceweather.com/aurora/gallery_01nov04_page7.htm http://www.geo.mtu.edu/weather/aurora/images/aurora/ -Nancy http://www.emeraldislestudios.com

All, First, let me say hello! I've used DMOZ for a while and I finally got around to making a forum account. Second, I have a question about the following guideline: How does the suggested bound of 100 websites apply to the situation described below? In this category: Computers: Programming: FAQs, Help, and Tutorials (30) there are only 30 sites, which is well within the suggested bound of 100 sites. However, that category is linked to this category: Computers: Programming: Languages: Java: FAQs, Help, and Tutorials (117) I would assume that the 100 site rule applies to the sites in a particular category as well as those in any subcategories. Does …

Although I have to say I'm still waiting to hear back about several of my web sites I've submitted here - some maybe I never will - after surfing this forum a bit I have to say that a lot of the visitors here are real pricks. Delivering some free web services with forums myself, I know what it's like to have people at least potentially benefiting from your hard work getting angry that you're not doing enough for them, or aren't doing it right. I just want to thank all the editors for all the hard work you do - I'm sure you know this but if it weren't good, DMOZ wouldn't be so important to the internet - and that is much appreciated.

I know this is a bit off topic but how many editors and metas are there in total? In the dmoz homepage it says there are 65,623 editors but that most probably includes ex-editors/metas right?
