Is it better for a site to list in more than one category? This must be against the "guidelines" yet I see it time and again. (Yes I have examples) Also, if I ask for a site to be updated and the editor chooses to completely ignore the request for a change to the title and description, what can I do about that? Without of course, having my site booted altogether. I read so much bad propaganda about the ODP I would much prefer to believe that it isn't true. That it is actually a good and altruistic thing and hasn't been hijacked by the forces of cash. Convince me.

Categories structure and URLs stability

What is the ODP policy concerning categories structure - and therefore URLs - stability? Since ODP taxonomy is the largest freely available on the Web, one could consider using the categories' URLs as "Published Subject Indicators" (PSI) as defined in Topic Maps specifications. See more about that PSI question at: www.oasis-open.org/committees/tm-pubsubj/ This is BTW an OASIS Technical Committee I'm chairing, and I was wondering (also as a former editor) if there is any awareness/interest at all in the ODP community in that matter?

Just wondering, who actually edits the categories with no editors? and what if an editor decided to leave their position without notifying anyone? is there a period in which if no updates occur, the editor would be changed? The reason I ask is that i've been trying to get a site into a category on dmoz with no editor for a while now and the listing hasn't changed? I consider my site one of, if not the most comprehensive site in this particular category. Paul

If I submit to a category that has no editor it is unlikely that my site will ever get listed?

Is it possible to know when pages in certain categories were last updated? I am interested in various categories most if not all of which have not seemed to have a dedicated editor for at least two years if not more. I appreciate editors can do some work in a category that they are not listed as editors for so I was just wondering if I could tell if the categories are moving at all. Thanks.

Back in 2002 I was working at the website of a spiritual organization that has a global operation. I spent time trying to keep the site optimized. At the time there was a website with the opposite view that showed up in position 2 . I researched why that was the case, even though it didn't seem that the site should show up so well. What I came up with was that DMOZ had a guideline that websites of this nature, expressing their views of religious and spiritual organizations deserved prominence in search categorization and placement so that their views would be seen. My questions are: DMOZ isn't active as a live directory anymore. I see that the DMOZ category that I…

I'm trying to determine whether a given DMOZ category has certain properties. For example, does presence in that category indicate that a site is commercial? Obviously, anything under "Shopping" or "Business" can be considered commercial, but what about the categories under "Computers/Internet" or "Recreation/Travel"? Is there any data useful in categorizing the categories? Another categorization is single-authorship sites vs. aggregation/hosting sites. Is there any way to identify hosting services, blogs, social-networking sites, forum systems, and other sites where the content is user-provided? Such sites appear in dozens of different DMOZ categories, and there's …

Hello I have a sports baseball cap website that I would like to get listed with the DMOZ. After hearing some positive things I decided to look around and see what information I could gather about the DMOZ. Judging from this forum there doesn’t seem to be many satisfied people. There are of course two sides to every story so I will rule these opinions out. Judging from the information in the category listings I have referenced, there seems to be some problems with the listings. There are broken links and the category hasn’t been updated for 3 months. Basically my concern is that submitting to this category would be a bad idea as it seems to be one of the one…

Consupro.net has been listed in the category Computers/Software/Internet/Site_Management/Content_Management/ ... forever. I have tried at least three times over the past few years to get the category changed to Business/E-Commerce/Technology_Vendors/ as "Content Management" doesn't begin to cover the scope of this site's services. The description has also evolved along with upgrades in the applications, but despite all efforts, it's still listed the same. A new request was entered approx. 3 months ago. Help?

I need some assistance. I looks as though a category has changed where I need to update the URL of a website. The website is www.ramsierandcompany.com and it needs to be changed to www.ramsier.com. When searching for the site in the OPD I get this category: Regional: North America: United States: Ohio: Localities: C: Canton: Business and Economy: Real Estate, but the site is not listed there. Is it listed somewhere else that I can make the change, or can the change be made from this post? Thanks

I own a wedding favor website and recently added party favors for many other occassions. Would it be possible to change the category that was submitted? My site has not yet been reviewed. Old Category: http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Weddings/Reception/Favors/ Desired Category: http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Entertainment/Party_Supplies/Favors/ I realize that I should have submitted my site to the proper catagory initially, but my goal was to simply be a wedding favor website. I didn't expect that customers would request so many party favors for other celebrations. Thank you for your consideration, Joyce Kreger http://www.cool-party-favors.com

I submitted a category change for my site about a year ago - in the summer of '04. In Sept. '04 I was informed by an editor that if it had not been changed by March '05 I should contact them. This is July '05 it still hasn't been changed! I appreciate the fact that dmoz is free and that the editors are volunteering a valuable service. But, a year!!! C'mon!! Can dmoz pls act on my request of a year ago? Thanks. http://www.the3cgroup.com

I've previously submitted a number of sites to ODP which have not (so far) appeared in the directory. My suspicion is that they may have been rejected for inadvertently being submitted to the wrong category ( some are regional). I try to submit to the correct category by comparing similar sites, but then I find that there is no "mirrored" directory structure for my country. This inconsistency may be the cause of failed listings. Perhaps it's time for a clean-up of the categories? Stuart

Our site was listed with dmoz but now its there when you do a search but click on the category and the category doesn't exist anymore. Is this something that dmoz will rectify, i.e. transferring the site into another category or should I resubmit? Thanks!

I hope this is submitted to the right place. I am interested (I have applied to be an editor) in the category. Society: Religion and Spirituality: Christianity: Perspectives: Prophecy: Prophecies: End Times: Ministries. The description appears to contain a mispelling. Shouldn't "counciling" should be "counseling". Is it truly intended that online evangelism, and online conferences are possible? Since these activities appear to be group oriented it seems likely that they only occur in the physical realm.

I was looking around in the category i submitted my site to and it doesnt list any editors for it. Does this mean there is no editor for my category? If there isnt, does the fact that I have a site waiting submission to that category rule me out for applying to be an editor?

Hi, If i search for shopping from within the Dmoz search engine, it takes me to the category Top: Shopping: Directories and at the bottom of this page is a list of inclusions within this category. But there is no suggest url link on top of page for this category. Therefore I can not suggest my web sites which are appropriate for this category. I have tried suggesting my sites to categories other than the above for the past year, but as of yet no inclusion. My web sites are as follows in case i am trying to suggest to wrong catergory: http://www.uk-shop-and-buy.co.uk http://www.online-shopping-2u.com I thank you for your time to anyone who replies to this post.

Our website http://www.offshore-company-store.com was listed in the Business/Financial_Services/Offshore Services category and was then removed (to my mind without any reason). Resubmission has failed, and yet whilst searching elsewhere for our site I came across a listing for us at http://www.trexle.com/Directory/Top/Business/Financial_Services/Offshore_Services/ http://www.trexle.com appears to use DMOZ. Although we don't appear in the Offshore Services category of http://www.DMOZ.ORG, we appear in the Offshore services category of a website that uses DMOZ and this category contains all of the same firms and websites that are shown in Offshore services on DMOZ.ORG. E…
