The ODP can only be as good as its team of editors. From the contributions that some editors make to these forums, one can surmise from the tone of voice, temperament, quality of writing and editing that the ODP has a good proportion of bad editors. Though the forums put the dirty linen in public, they can serve one positive purpose. By regularly reviewing editor's postings, Senior editors, assuming they are the ones responsible, could spot those who require advice, coaching or even training. Someone jeered when I mentioned the power of perception in a previous thread. But that is a fact of life in the information age. Perception, especially a growing or widely held n…

Hello DMOZ Team, I have submitted approx 4-5 requests for a description & change to my DMOZ listing over the last 2 years. I followed the guidelines, spoke professionally and polietly. Yet never heard a response or confirmation. Can I ask how to "effectively" persue this request? I have summarized the changes below. Thank you, N.A.C. Chico, CA almond king of CA (site) http://www.line-man.com (current location) http://dmoz.org/Business/Telecommunications/Construction,_Installation,_and_Maintenance/ ____________________________________________________ Requested changes: 1- small edit to description: Where a Lineman can find Jobs, Boots, Tools and Co…

Hi, As MANY other users I'm waiting my site to be listed in the ODP ... 10 months (or longer), As MANY other users I don't know (and there is no way to know) if my site has been rejected or not, As MANY other users I know that ODP editors are volunteers, but know - as well - that IMPORTANT search engines use ODP and being included in the ODP CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. Just some suggestions: * make an automatic "site status page" where one can search the status of his site (I think that the SUPER-SIMPLE information: QUEUED - REJECTED - APPROVED can be enough) * if a site is queued, and one resubmit it, simply forbid resubmission, do not change its position on…

I would just like to say that it probably is true when I hear DMOZ being corrupt. So many Editors have sold their account privately and publicly, proving this is already corrupt. http://www.threadwatch.org/node/4276 This was taken off eBay with the price reaching 3000 plus dollars USD, it was then sold privately. Secondly you can find this yourself but many Editors/Meta's do write Blogs explaining what they have done today and one Meta states " Decided to wake up early in the morning and randomly rejected the first 15 Applications, put 4 in review and accepeted 1 " You can find one of the Blogs here http://www.jimboykin.com/psssst-giving-away-dmoz-edi…

Hi, I am planning to use the ODP search engine (http://www.dmoz.org) for my research. Is there a limit to the number of searches that can be made in a day? Thanks, Rahul.

Should there be a category to hold standards institutes? If there already is such a category, I failed to find it. There is plenty of material for an English-langauge category, and also for Spanish French Portuguese German categories in World. With English content Asociación Espanola de Normalización y Certificación, Association française de normalisation, British Standards Institution, European Committee for Standardization, Bureau de Normalisation du Québec, Canadian Standards Association, Deutsches Institut für Normung, Croatian State Office for Standardization and Metrology, Hellenic Organization for Standardization, European Organization for Technical Approva…

I submitted the site http://www.nameslot.com to the directory some days ago. At that time the category in which I had submitted was last updated on 4th december or something. Today I again went to that same category to see if my site was there or not. Now this time the categroy was last updated on 27th december. So should I assume that my site profile was rejected? Should I try and resubmit my site in the same category? Please let me know. The last time I submitted the site I used the following info:- Nameslot.com http://www.nameslot.com/ Forum where you can buy, sell & talk about domain names. Free registrations, bonus tools and domain showcase. Than…

hi guys, After reading some posts on this forum I have realised the error of my ways. Apologies as I believed that by submitting to various categories it would not be regarded as re-submitting / re-suggesting the same entry. I was just wondering whether it was possible to delete some of my over-suggestions so that it does not affect my sites chances of eventually getting listed. if possible then i can post / pm my site domain. Thanks Andy

Every action has a reason for it. How is it that in this day and age of advanced technology, that it is possible to submit the same site multiple times, when a simple script can reveal that the domain is already awaiting review on dmoz? Considering how long it takes these days to get listed on dmoz, it's possible to simply not remember a particular domain has already been submitted. The other case is that your competitor could sabotage you by submitting your site regularly.

I'm doing a little research for an article and wondered if any ODP editors would care to comment on the quality of descriptions included with submissions? So people browsing this post have an idea of what I'm talking about, this is the text from the submission page: How many descriptions out of 100, say, actually meet these requirements? How many people use ALL CAPS? How many are cheeky enough to include HTML? And - perhaps the killer - how many submissions are deleted or significantly delayed because of poorly written descriptions? Full disclosure: I also operate my own (very small) human-edited directory (here) and my own findings are that maybe one in …

To where does one submit sites about the Buncefield fuel depot fire? I can't find an existing category. Sites such as http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4518180.stm http://www.bpa.co.uk/news/ http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/12/13/britain.oil.blasts/ and others. (If you create such as category, please green these.)

A few months ago, the Google Directory indicator -- use in both IE's Google toolbar and Firefox's PageRank extension -- stopped working. Does anyone know whether this function will be restored? Thx, -KH

I found this on google. Another day, another screwed DMOZ submission It's another day and more submissions are lining my queues. I go to a cafe with free internet access and cute college age kids behind the counter, and log in to one of my dmoz accounts using firefox to spoof the OS and browser. Then I delete a handful of listings starting from the top without even looking at them. The next batch I include but I make sure to drain the listings of any useful keywords. The next bunch I keep on hold for the next time. I have a few listings that have been on hold for, I kid you not, eighteen months. The Wisdom of Weeding Out the Competitors It's imperative to join …

The Internet Archive is a repository that encourages Creative Commons licensing. Have the editors at Open Directory considered offering a category for Independent Musicians, bands, that either use CC-licensing or are pursuing their professional track independent of the traditional record label controls? I would like to discuss this, if there's interest. There's definitely a need, in my opinion, to have a centralized location where folks can identify such music, and feel comfortable in knowing that it is a pretty comprehensive collection of what is available.

Will listing process lead to an out-of-date directory? Hi. I recently resubmitted my site after about 8 months of no response. I resubmitted to a new category, one that I feel better about being the "correct" category. There are very similar businesses to mine in each of the two categories, but I suppose they are slightly more similar in this latest category. I know that this puts me at the bottom of the queue, but I'd rather be at the bottom of the right queue than at the middle of the wrong one... It's only been a few weeks, so I in no way expect to have been reviewed by now. But since I've submitted, I had this thought: If it takes 1 to 3 years to be revi…

Hopefully I'm not rehashing something already here on the forums, but here goes. I submitted a website to DMOZ for the company I work for about a year ago, and never got listed in your directory. I resubmitted about six months ago without being added, and again a few days ago. My boss is wanting a higher placement in some search engines, and we feel that a listing in DMOZ would be a big boost, so we have continued to suggest our site. I have just realized that there is no editor listed for the category that we want to be in, so does that mean that we are at a complete stop as to getting listed in this category? I realize that the editors are all volunteers, and are …

It may help to translate your site into another language and submit it to that language category. The Spanish version of my website got listed within 2 months time, while the English version is still pending review (I hope) after almost a year. By the way, I do think that 4 months of inactivity before removing an editor is FAR too much. Make it 1 month! If I am right it may take years before a site is listed... and that's a pity because there are fantastic new sites out there with better products, new developments, revolutional invents... only a few of them listed at dmoz.
