Just wondered are there any figures for number of people applying to become editors and the % accepted. I see some of the senior people on here saying it can take anything from weeks to years to get a site reviewed, Surely as an information directory it is not beneficial for people who use the directory to not be able to find most up to date information it should not take years… Could some of the people that apply to become editors be used as a sort of team to clear backlogs or even just weed out multiple suggested sites or the spam allowing senior people more time for other ones as a sort of apprentice route (Maybe over seen buy senior editors)Then be given a role a…

[specific details removed by moderator] My questions: 1. Are we wasting our time when we submit sites to ODP? 2. Are we wasting our time when we apply to be editors? It took a long time just to get a username for this forum.

hi guys, After reading some posts on this forum I have realised the error of my ways. Apologies as I believed that by submitting to various categories it would not be regarded as re-submitting / re-suggesting the same entry. I was just wondering whether it was possible to delete some of my over-suggestions so that it does not affect my sites chances of eventually getting listed. if possible then i can post / pm my site domain. Thanks Andy

Quote from the editor application page: '... Your application is an indication of the kind of editor you will be. An poorly written application with spelling and grammatical errors...'' AN poorly written ...? It should be A. Oxford Engish Dic 'a form of a, used before an initial vowel and sometimes before an initial h'. Ah, it also contains a footnote: 'grammatical correctness does not apply to search directories.' /images/dmoz/purplegrin.gif

OK, maybe this is just a stupid question. But how do you tell if a site has 'unique' content for the category? I mean, how unique can you get? It's basically for forums and chat systems. Which is all well and good. But there's only so many different forms of Chats and Forums that are Writing Resources. Any help? ~Polly

Even though I have been unsuccessful a few times in apply for an editor of http://www.dmoz.org/Recreation/Travel/Lodging/Vacation_Rentals/Directories/ I wondered if there was a forum where I could report any abuse? I must also say that I read your guidelines which were very useful, and spent over an hour completing the form, and I received a response within 20 minutes of completing the form, with a list as long as your arm of possible reasons for been rejected. It doesnt help you if you want to reapply and look at the areas you need to improve on. Not a critism more a constructive comment.

I noticed that many auction sites including Ebay, on DMOZ use key words on door way pages to either directly or indirectly drive people to thier sites. Search: ebay Open Directory Categories (1-5 of 5) Shopping: Auctions (11 matches) Home: Consumer Information: Auctions: eBay (10) Computers: Software: Internet: Servers: Shopping: Auctions (50) Computers: Software: Internet: Servers: Shopping: Auctions: Assistance: Web Based (24) World: Deutsch: Online-Shops: Auktionen: Ebay (4) Open Directory Sites (1-20 of 472) I have been creating a page a day for months. Only to find not one has been listed. Why? Bob H. Maxbid.Net Online Auction h…

As a new member, I notice quite a bit of frustration and time spent on NOT knowing. I may be a bit naive or have not been here long enough to know whether it was previously discussed, could not find it in FAQ, but has anyone thought of an automated interactive database. Something like: 1. You submit a site within a category. 2. It automatically joins the line within the category. 3. Your number in line is created so when visiting, webmasters can view their number in line. 4. As the editors, pull a site, to be worked, from the line every other site in the category moves up one. 5. This also allows webmasters to approximate the time frame of moving up one numb…

... are they a problem for the ODP? IE - scripts and/or programs that "browse" through the ODP and automatically submit sites to several categories? If so: Wouldn't image verification on the submission page help?

I know this is probably a dumb question and has been shot down before, BUT Would it be possible to automate the status check? Some kind of form - Enter URL: Enter category: >Submit. Response - Url is waiting for review. There is no way of telling how long that may be and there is no guarantee that the URL will be listed. Thank you for your enquiry. or Url has been denied by an editor for reason(s) listed in the "suggest a site" guidelines. Please do not try to contact an editor for reasons why site was declined for none will be discussed at any time. or Url has not been received in that category. Please check to see if you may have submit…

I'm sure this has been covered before but I can't find a thread on it ('status' & 'reporting' are hot keywords!)... Wouldn't it save you guys a huge amount of work if there were a submission status lookup facility? I've got some RSS feeds listed on Syndic8 where all submissions appear as soon as they are made and have a status log. (That's what just made me think of it) At first a submitted feed status shows up as "awaiting polling", then for several weeks while it is being spidered it is "polling", then an editor passes it or rejects it, and that is recorded in the log too. A similar system for Dmoz could be really basic. Maybe a search argument? (This …

Hello Friends, I pop into the Forum now and then, and would like to use an avatar. I have a link in my signature to what I would like it to be; is there any way to get it to show as an image rather than a link? Blessings, Nancy

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew how long it takes for a site to be reviewed on average. I understand that this is mostly voluntary work and different sections of the directory are handled differently and it takes different amount of time to get listed in different sections. But course its not like a section is not looked into for a year or so. So i guess what I am asking is that, is there a ball park figure or period range as to how long it takes for a site to be reviewed after which i would know that its either accepted or not and I should stop checking back. I do want to add that i think the work being done on the directory is impressive and i can unders…

It seems there are editors no longer doing anything for dmoz but yet still own categories. Are there any requirements to stay an editor in terms of activity? If an editor no longer does anything for say, over a year (or more), does anything happen? (Besides requests to the editor being ignored thanks, bryan

In my awstats, I have "Links from an Internet Search Engine" showing 1 visit from "DMOZ." However, I do not see an ODP listing for my site. Does anyone know why this is? Is someone else leaving DMOZ as their signature? Thank you.

If a site prevents you from leaving it, i.e. the back-button is somehow disabled if you attempt to leave the site, is that reason enough by itself not to include such a site in the directory? From a user point of view such sites are very annoying, and less experienced users might have difficulties understanding what is going on and how to overcome the problem by going back via the browsers drop-down list of sites visited. Or could an otherwise contentrich and category-relevant site still be considered for inclusion in spite of such a flaw.

Hello Meta/Editor, I have seen a few editors mention that in some categories(named the cat in the post), the backlog was quite high. Is there anyway to find out the backlog in a category? If so the category in question is below. If this is not the proper information too ask for I apologize in advance for wasting the ODP valuable time. I did apply and submit for this category so I am wonder what shape it is in at the moment. Thank You. http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Bedroom/Bedding/Down/ -down guy (Lauren Miehe)

Hello I submitted my site for like 4 months ago. Now when I have lernt more about writing descriptions I think the description I submited for my page is kind of wrong. Should it be better to tell an editor to remove my submission so I could submit a new description, as I understand there is no queue system is it? And I can't submit again because that would be spam....is there anything I could do to get my site reviewed faster?

We're thoroughly baffled. And our apologies in advance for being long-winded, but we think it is warranted (the windiness, as well as the apology ) Sometime in the last week to ten days, our site (http://football.refs.org) was deleted from DMOZ. Baffling to us, considering that less three years ago, our site was THE starred site in the DMOZ category of Sports: Football: American: Officiating. (As proof, look at IA's Wayback Machine for DMOZ's listing for August 2001 - http://web.archive.org/web/20010802200232/dmoz.org/Sports/Football/American/Officiating/). We couldn't imagine why we were suddenly removed from DMOZ until we considered the following: In the las…

Bannable offences I have a friend looking to re-register with DMOZ, And He asked me if I may make a petition in his behalf. I briefly discussed with him the Oct 2003 posting, And Wanted to make a reply there, but did not have the necessary privleges to do so. (NEW MEMBER) I have brought the thread into this posting instead. I think it is good to bring up previously posted information like this, especially for newcomers of this forum. I agree there is ample information and guidelines given on the rules and regulations of "DMOZ", But do you not agree, that with an overly communicated society in which we live, be it through Television, Radio and now the Internet, that p…

If anyone can help me with this problem, I would greatly appreciate it... I was an editor of a shopping/prescription drug category and, of course, most editors know that these categories are used and abused for personal gain and monetary reasons. I was the editor of this category for over a year and a half. The only complaints or controversy I ever received while being this editor was the occasional irritated "affiliate" submitting thier website, knowing good and well that I would reject it. Other than that, I would keep pretty good control of the category and relevance of the sites listed. Then, one day I try to log in and my password doesn't work. Not only that, but …

Without knowing the reason it is difficult to respond and the overworked editor has understandably not replied. If I have been banned, will this be forever? Please anybody help!

To all users on this board. Be patient for a response to your posting. I found ODP volunteers to be very professional and respond the same day.
