Just a quick question. It's now been over a year since submitting my website to dmoz (don't worry I'm not going to complain about the wait ) but I've notice periodic visits (about a month between each) from editors/watchlist.cgi (registered on my site stats). Why the frequent visits (I would imagine it only takes one visit to assess whether or not to add to the directory)? W.>

I have tried several times to get my site listed in the DMOZ directory without any luck todate. I have read through the rules and believe that my site meets all expectations so firstly could someone explain why a site would not be accepted if it meets all criteria and secondly why it is so hard on the dmoz site to find any contact details in order to get "help" as i am sure there are plenty of people who need it.

Hi everybody! I've determined to make use of some web service to manage my beta stage and beta testers better. There's a lot of them on the web. I was wondering maybe someone already has used some of them and can assist me in making a choice. Appreciate your replies

I'm starting this as a new thread as I'd like to keep it distinct from the mutiple site/deep link issue which is its own ball of wax. On the FAQ, in response to why one site might be listed and others on a subject might not, the FAQ includes the following: <<If you wish your site to be listed in a particular category, it should be better than the best site already listed and offer content not offered by any other site already in the category. Don't aim to be second worst, aim to be best.>> This is an interesting issue, and one that needs to be clarified...perhaps at the very introduction to what is the DMOZ. Is the DMOZ's purpose to be a research t…

Beware: Submittal Companies may ruin you chances of being listed in ODP

Beware: Submittal Companies may ruin your chances of being listed in ODP I recently signed up with a search engine submittal company, not knowing that they would submit my site to DMOZ along with the commercial search engines. I didn't realize this until I received their first submittal report which listed DMOZ. I then requested by email that they no longer submit to DMOZ as that violated submittal policies (no repeat submittals, no auto-submission software). This is part of the reply that I recieved: "As part of the submission process we cannot exclude or include any other site. DMOZ is included every month." Upon receipt of that I immediately canceled my sub…

Hi, I have a big problem with the reset of a new password. My editor registered email address is at Yahoo.com which rejects messages from DMOZ so I can't receive the reply from it. Therefore I need your help but, please, send me the password reset link from another mail system which has spf and dkim. Or you may request another editor email address which works with DMOZ (I have one with Google.com). Thanks for your time. MINDSPRING

Hello , I need some major help here . I own a website called worldbodyjewelry.net . It is one of the largest body jewelry sites online . It has taken me 3 years to build it to how it is now. Last year i submitted it to Dmoz. I was listed for about a week and then droped from the listing and "blacklisted" I need someone to tell me WHY. The only reason that i got about it is that my website was registered under another body jewelry company from out of state. That is true but it is because they bought the name for me. We are totally 2 different companys, I have over 1,000 different products then they do and no other sites carry the 1,000 addition products that i do. I…

I've been trying to get my site listed for over 2 years with no response from anyone. I just read on wikipedia that: "as of October 2007, Topix.com, a news aggregation site operated by ODP founder Rich Skrenta, has more than 10,000 listings" And, Lo and behold: http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=topix Now, please, can someone explain to me how this is allowed to happen?

I think its time there is a serious discussion about what to do with the DMOZ to turn around this farcical, corrupt to the core directory. Its a shame what it has become when it could be so much better. So in that aspect, I have done a guest post admitting I have been selling dmoz listings, and outlining some ways which the directory could be improved. <url removed> If you have any questions or a different opinion I would love to hear them. I'm guessing my account here (well this one anyway) doesn't last long but I will reply to anything left on the post above...

For about the last two weeks we have been unable to access http://www.dmoz.org or dmoz.org. Finally this morning we tried access from another network and can get to the site just fine. DNS is no different between the networks.... both resolve to 207.200.81.154 . The only activity we have had on the site is submitting sites and submission of a editor application. I can't for the life of me figure out why this should be happening. Does anyone have any ideas?

While I'm in ODP learning mode, I just have to ask, have any of the Editors ever been offered (and of course declined) a bribe and, if so, are they willing to reveal how much it was for, or what was offered? Obviously without any specifics... And no, I'm not trying to work out where to set my pitch at. I'm too much of a tight-fisted old swine.

Is there any way to report broken links in a category without being an editor? I was looking for a "Report Broken Link" button or something similar and could not find anything.

Congratulations on a useful looking Forum. Does anybody know which browsers (including versions) that a site must be compliant with to be successfully reviewed for ODP. Secondly, I am in the UK and would like to know if the criteria applied are consistent throughout the regional ODPs. Thanks in advance

To where does one submit sites about the Buncefield fuel depot fire? I can't find an existing category. Sites such as http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4518180.stm http://www.bpa.co.uk/news/ http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/12/13/britain.oil.blasts/ and others. (If you create such as category, please green these.)

Business and/or regional category?
by Guest dhunt217- 2 replies

Hi, I am considering where it would be best to submit my site. The site, New Haden Pumps would be suitable for the business category of: http://www.dmoz.org/Business/Industrial_Goods_and_Services/Fluid_and_Gas_Control/Pumps/ but may also fit in it's relative regional category of: http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Staffordshire/Cheadle/ Is a site eligible for being listed in both a subject related category and a regional one or is it always just one or the other? Thanks for any feedback you can give me

Call to action

Here's my two cents: It seems that everyone has to kiss up to ODP. For fear of retaliation against their sites, people seem to hold back their true opinions. Sure, rules are as necessary as food and water; however, editors shouldn't act like it is such a privilidge to get a site reviewed. What corporation ever waited a week to see if their changes would work? This is a directory, and it's been broken for over 2 months. Hey, I'll donate $50 right now. I'm sure that there are plenty of others. It seems that ODP lacks action and objectivity. How long must a world of people wait to get this thing fixed? I wonder what kind of retaliatory action will be taken against me for thi…
