Re: uzs980 I think your question is "can I apply to be an editor of this category"? You can certainly apply, but be aware that you need to be pretty fluent in English to be accepted to edit in the English part of the directory. If you would prefer to edit in a Russian language category then they are all under http://ch.dmoz.org/World/Russian/ . If you ask in the Becoming an Editor forum here, you will be able to get more specific advice from the meta editors who actually review and accept or decline applications. -
Re: koded.com - changed to koded.co.uk Actually we can give *guesses* as to how long it will take to be listed - I'm guessing seventeen weeks, three days, five hours and twenty two minutes. Let me know whether I was the closest! On a serious note, the point is that if an editor decides to pass by that category tomorrow then it might be listed then, if no-one decides to pass by for six months then it'll take longer than six months. No way to tell...

Re: Few more Missing in Regional/North_America/United_States/Government/Services : www.govworks.com is now a search411 directory. Interesting how I came across this one - I've spent this afternoon watching a documentary on how govworks.com raised $50 million in the dot com boom and then crashed when it couldn't make it back in revenue. For any dot com entrepreneurs out there, the documentary StartUp.com is well worth a look if you can get hold of a copy. -
I am regularly coming across sites in unreviewed queues with submission dates going back to spring or summer 2002 and occasionally find ones going back even further than that. Most people who submit their sites to the ODP consider that they have waited 'an eternity' but it's just not possible to get through all the submissions any quicker than we already do. It is a volunteer-edited directory after all. Getting accepted to edit is not difficult if: 1) you apply for an appropriately sized category 2) your motive for editing is clearly to contribute to the overall directory, not just to list your site 3) you have declared your affiliations honestly 4) you have read the guidelines thoroughly and 5) you are able to find three new sites and write guidelines-compliant titles and descriptions for them with no hype or spelling mistakes.

Your site has been deleted previously from the Business/Consumer_Goods_and_Services/Beauty category and has now also been deleted from another inappropriate category, Health/Beauty - a submission that you appear to have forgotten about. The site is appropriately listed in Shopping/Health/Beauty and it would be worthwhile avoiding making any further inappropriate submissions.

Yes, you're being hopeful! I don't quite get it - what's the point of your page? Are you trying to drive traffic to those domains or are you just putting up a links page for fun? If you're trying to drive traffic to the other domains then I'd concentrate on trying to get those listed if they're not already. If you're putting the page up just for fun then I can't see that it really matters much if the ODP doesn't list it. If you really really want to get it listed all the same then why not write some content about famous bearparks, people, places etc., maybe find some pictures, contact other Bearparks to get their contributions to your page etc. etc. - then it could be validly listed in the Personal Pages category.
-
What you really need is unique content rather than just a list of links. The ODP is itself a list of links so it doesn't tend to list other ones anywhere other than specific directory categories. Single page sites are also pretty rarely listed - even if your 200 words or so were unique content that's still not very much. I'd get developing the site so that it's got more to it by the time an editor comes to review it. At the moment I'd be surprised if it got listed in the Personal_Homepages category either.

Now over 300 sites waiting for review. Ordered by date you're about half way up. Sorry. If there's a more specific category that you'd be better suited for (e.g. Support_Groups) then you should resubmit there. I haven't extensively reviewed your site so it's up to you. -
Apologies - my fault. I had forgotten the Shopping category requirements of shipping to multiple countries. The advice given to submit to Regional is correct.
-
Why do you want to apply for that category if you can't think of any way to improve it? I don't know, but I'd guess that the unreviewed queues in the web designer categories are pretty frequently updated with new submissions. I can see three options available: 1) Google (or other SE) search - look harder than you already have, to pages further down the index than you already have. 2) Follow links between sites to find more web designers not yet listed in dmoz. 3) Apply for a different category, e.g. your home town, build up some editing experience, and then apply for this category at a later date when you're more skilled at finding quality sites.
-
Well, if you feel that the site is valid to be listed in its current category then leave it there. If you feel in addition that it can be listed in the Regional portion of the directory then the best thing to do is to submit it fresh to the Regional category using the Add URL link. Submitting an update URL request is most appropriate if you want the site to be moved from the Topical category to the Regional category, but not if you want to ask for a second listing, leaving the first one in place. If your site is only relevant to its Regional location, e.g. local services, local information only, then ask for it to be moved. If it is relevant to Topical, e.g. general information relevant to a wide audience, internet-based or international services and delivery, then leave it in Topical.

Oh I'm sorry! I'll get back in my hole. Of course I appreciate that windharp is not English and trying very hard to help everyone out here. I honestly did *not* mean to offend.
-
Ah, apologies. I'm just learning the Regional ropes myself.
-
Ooh windharp - either that was humour or not a great example to set: - You applied for a category thats to large (including all physical subcategories). that's - Your sample URLs where not apropriate for the category or already listed apropriately appropriate, appropriately - Your spellink or grammar was not acceptable spelling - You where not honest about yourself were A very common reason for rejection is that people go for a category that is too large. Try to find one with 20-50 sites maximum (including all subcategories) and avoid spammy areas of the directory like gambling, where you really need previous editing experience to spot the unlistable sites. Declare your affiliations fully and honestly - having affiliations is not counted against you. Give three new URLs that aren't already in the directory, ideally none of which from your own sites. Write concise hype and keyword-free titles and descriptions according to the guidelines. Spell check your entries in Word before submitting them. You're not expected to be perfect when you first start - there's an internal New Editors forum where you pick up how the system works. But you are expected to show a basic ability to describe a site accurately and without using hype. Good luck!

No, you are allowed both - but you have to have a location given on your site, like a business address, to get the Regional listing. If your site is *only* relevant to Regional - e.g. a bookstore that doesn't sell books online, only to real customers coming through the door - then you probably wouldn't get a topical listing. You could get a topical listing though if your site included informative content that was relevant to everyone worldwide, e.g. biographies of different authors.

Every category has an editor, not every category has its own dedicated named editor. Any editor higher up the tree can edit in all the cats below them. Any editor that is an editall or meta can edit anywhere in the directory. You should submit to the category that is most appropriate for your site. Nowhere else. Which of the above categories is most appropriate for your site? Or is there another category that is more appropriate than those (without its own editor)? -
Click the "update URL" link on the category where the site is currently listed and follow the instructions.
-
Hi. As your content is essentially specific to Canada (e.g. appointment scheduling in Canada only) and most of your services are available only on subscription, I have moved you to unreviewed in Regional/North_America/Canada/Health/ . The site should be eligible for listing in that specific category. There are no dedicated editors for that category but plenty for the next category up the tree, so hopefully you shouldn't be waiting for that much longer.
-
Use the update URL link at the top of the cat where the site is currently listed. Sites are entitled to both a topical and a regional listing, by the way.
-
Find a meta editor here, e.g. kctipton, and send them a private message with specific details - which cat, your site, his site. See the guidelines in the Abuse Reporting forum. http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum17/1473.htm Here is a previous discussion of this issue.
-
The rule about multiple topical listings is best illustrated by a website with significant content on both cutlery and sheet music - two completely different subjects both covered in some detail. Publishing books on fiction and non-fiction is still just publishing books, although you could get a listing in Publishing rather than Publishing/Fiction and Publishing/Non-Fiction.
-
If you sell stuff on your site then you must submit in Shopping/Health somewhere.
-
When did you submit? There's a very long queue in unreviewed for that cat but I can't see your site there.
-
The site was only submitted on March 14th. Please wait at least a month before enquiring about the status of a listing. FYI, it's not in that long a queue but it's in a category that doesn't get that much editing attention.
