  1. I'm not getting the currently online list accross the top, nor the "most recent member" notation anymore. I liked those.. want them back! <img src="/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" /> [added] Looks like the admin flags are gone now too on admin and mod's names? [added more] ratings look new (I don't remember them anyway) what are they based on? [added again] n/m on the last comment. I figured it out on my own (threads have ratings at the bottom, and editors have ratings on their profile). Not sure I like the idea.. but that's a different topic. <img src="/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" />
  2. Well the Shopping area points to the Business category, so it was the right location after all. I've listed it. Hopefully you'll be happy with the description.
  3. There are a lot of unreviewed sites in that category. I've checked the sites and you are still waiting in there. Because it is a shopping site I'm not sure it belongs where you submitted it, so I'm looking for a new location. If you have a "real" storefront you can ask for a listing in the Regional tree as well, but I'd suggest adding information about your location on the site first.
  4. Okay they should all be done now, at least everyone since apeuro's last post. /images/icons/smile.gif
  5. Problem seems to be fixed now. Feel free to apply again. If you receive another error let us know. /images/icons/smile.gif
  6. Yes, automatic sending of e-mails (like the ones that go out to new editors among others) is not working. At the moment we have no news on when the problem will be fixed. In the mean time, patience, it will work again soon I'm sure. /images/icons/smile.gif
  7. It wasn't lost this time. Welcome to ODP "sharonk". /images/icons/smile.gif
  8. It looks like your application has been rejected. If you are still interested please feel free to apply again. Make sure to check your spelling, grammer, and be honest with any affiliations you may have. Give 3 URLs, and make sure at least two of them are not your own site. Good luck
  9. What editor name did you apply with? Both this time and last (two years ago).
  10. Re: Design versus Hosting A note about the web designers category. a) if you offer both designing and hosting you go in to the Designers category only (it's a little odd, but it's what was decided). b) the unreviewed in this area of the directory is extremely overwhelming. Unfortuantly the size of the categories involved also makes most of them too large for new editors. But if you're a webdesigner (or just interested in design), and you might be interested in helping some of your fellow designers out, picking a small letter (in this area I think that would be approx. 200 sites or less) and applying to be an editor would be really cool. enarra ODP Meta Editor and editor of: <a href="http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Designers">Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Designers</a>
  11. Staff has just announced the problems with the new editor application forms have been corrected. If anyone still has a problem please contact one of the metas so we can report the issue to the proper people. Thanks, enarra ODP Meta Editor
  12. There is currently a bug in the new system. If you send an application to be an editor at the present time it is quite possible you will receive an error message and the application contents will be lost. To avoid this please save the contents your application on your own computer prior to submitting the application (this is a good idea at all times in case you pick a username which is taken, or an unacceptable password, both actions have been known to delete application contents when one hits "back" in their browser). We will post here again when the errors in the new editor application are resolved. Thanks for your patience, enarra ODP Meta Editor
  13. There is a bug, yes. Staff is aware of the problem and will have it fixed ASAP. We'll post again as soon as we hear anything. For now, please save your application, and wait until the issue is sorted out. /images/icons/smile.gif
  14. Nothing to worry about. It's was simply an editor misunderstanding about the pratice of listing sites in both Regional/ and Business/. It's perfectly fine, but the editor didn't realize that.
  15. Thank you dstanovic, I agree with you from personal experience. Before I was an editor in ODP I spent countless hours working on a website, not for profit, but to assist others. I've done 25,000 edits in dmoz.org, I don't think that they have been without purpose or good intentions. Many of the most prolific editors in the directory edit simply because they enjoy the task of reviewing sites and seeing the directory grow. I would edit there with or without google.com and all of the other search engines who utilise our data.
  16. 1. Generally in Regional/ (at least in the United States) sites are listed at the location where the actually store/business is. The bricks and mortar approach if you will. However, listing a site again in a topical area, in your case under Business/ somewhere is fine. You can feel free to search out that area and submit your site. If however you're saying that you service a whole county for example then I would think you should contact a state level editor via e-mail and work out a solution with him/her. That might include you putting something on your website denoting your area of service. (I haven't looked at your site, so I don't know what it does or doesn't say). An editor who focuses in Regional (I don't) might give you a better reply on this one. 2. Someone else will have to answer this one. 3. http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=APS+Remodeling Seems to be working just fine for me. Sometimes there are bugs with the search engine function on dmoz.org. Maybe you tried it on a bad day. /images/icons/smile.gif
  17. Yes, I meant to mention that. The automatic e-mail, sent as soon as you apply, is to validate your e-mail address. You must reply to that message for your application to even appear in the location for metas to review it.

Re: Forum Bug Actually it does, under the replies column it says 2 (1). The 1 denotes how many new posts there are.

  20. If you are accepted as an editor you will recieve two e-mails from the meta editor who reviewed your application. One is a welcoming letter including your user name and password, the second is a text version of the guidelines (which is actually quite out of date, so be sure to read the HTML version). Depending on the area you joined up in one of more normal editors might also send you welcome letters with advice and invitations to certain areas of the forums. If you are rejected the meta reviewing the application as a few options. One of which is to send no mail, this option is one I personally never use, but it's up to the meta, so it's possible you have been denied editorship at this point and don't know it. The other option is to send a rejection e-mail, something we can do without giving away our identity or return e-mail address, so that is the normal course of action. Feel free to apply as many times as you want. Perhaps wait one or two weeks between applications, and be sure to read our guidelines ( http://dmoz.org/guidelines.html ) and follow the advice in this forum. It will increase you chances greatly. Good luck!
  21. Meta editors (and staff editors) review applications. All applications are looked at by a human and judged for honesty, quality, and a few other factors such as the size of the category the person has applied for.
  22. Re: Are SEO practioners not welcomed as editors? Because of the zero tolerance for abuse (when found) metas reviewing applications for new editors are reasonably cautious. As an SEO we would look at your application, and consider the likely hood that you would abuse the system in order to get your clients (and only your clients) listed. Or would you use your extra knowledge to not only list your clients but to also list their compitition fairly and without bias. If it's the later, and everything else in your application is fine (apply to a small (less 100 sites is a general guideline) category, use proper grammar and spelling, and write 2-3 good descriptions) you should have no problem becoming an editor eventually. Somehow, in your application, you need to prove to the meta reviewing it that your goals as an editor are good ones. Remember though, above all else, stay honest!
  23. You did the right thing, indeed you did pretty much all you could do. I think the only other choice you might have had to get things worked out would have been to move up the tree higher to find a more experienced editor to handle the problem. For any one else experiencing this problem that is the thing to do.
  24. Both categories, especially the second, have a large back log of sites waiting to be reviewed. Both are fairly small categories on their own though. Have you considered applying for one of them? Although the first currently has an editor, there is nothing to say it can't have two, however, the second category you mentioned is in serious need of a dedicated editor.
  25. alucard is exactly right. At the moment, your site is not the type of site we will accept into the directory, and is not currently listed for that reason. Basically you need unique content that is your own, and not for-profit affiliate links to other site's content to be included in ODP. So, your solutions are to either beef up your content and consider removing some, or all, of the affiliate links. (You can keep some affiliates, but they can't be the dominate content, banner ads for revenue for example are completely fine unless that is all there is on the site. /images/icons/wink.gif ). Or you can keep your site as-is, but be satisfied with only being listed in spidered search engines, and not this directory.
