1. Re: http://www.molon.de/galleries/Egypt_Jan01/page No, I am not saying to get several domains – in fact I would discourage this. My point and questions was/are: 1) Let’s say you are selling these photographs or are offering to sell them – wouldn’t this be a business? Yes, you have very nice photos that many can see for free – but if you offering to sell these photographs it’s still a business and should be treated as such in the directory. 2) Reference/Information/Hobby categories/sites are not what I edit in so I can be way off-base here. What my question was/is that a site can/should be deeplinked in several regional categories based upon the location of the photographs (in your case). And since a site does not have a homepage/index complete with navigation to list in a more topical category – should a site keep getting listings based upon this. I should actually be asking this question to the senior editors in the proper forums but I do not want to leave your post to me unanswered. Like I stated do not take my questions personal – it is obviously my lack of knowledge on this matter that is causing confusion. I am waiting for a private reply from a senior editor on this matter – so hopefully it will be straightened out in my mind Dave

3. Re: http://www.molon.de/galleries/Egypt_Jan01/page Scooter24, I am not speaking “against” you or your site – but generally (you have some very nice photographs). My own personal “opinion” is that dmoz/ODP should not provide site navigation for a webmaster through deeplinking. There are many photography sites listed that could have literally “hundreds” of deeplinks if you started taking each set of photographs and their location into account. I believe it is the webmasters responsibility to get the pages found through navigation. Like I said this is my personal “opinion” and maybe you just should call me a grouch Dave
4. Re: http://www.molon.de/galleries/Egypt_Jan01/page I agree with that statement. But this is what causes confusion to other submitters. Seems like an awful lot of time is spent preparing/submitting deeplinks but yet the main site is under construction - yes it does make me suspicious. [Edited: Hmmm......Makes me wonder if the main site will ever be finished to allow for a listing.]
5. I see your domain with the non-working homepage currently has six listings in the directory. From my point of view you should have a working homepage with navigation to these “galleries”. This way your main site could have “one” listing and the deeplinks would be abolished. I do not edit in any of the categories you are listed or submitted to. It is only my “opinion”. I don’t like to see sites with multiple deeplinks when one “good” listing with a decent description could handle the entire site. Seems like the homepage could be intentionally left undone for this reason alone.
6. "Do not submit sites 'under construction'." Amen to that
7. orbiter, Works fine in both Opera6.x and IE6.x here - better check your systems Dave
8. sabre23t, << http://dmoz.org/ - PageRank 10 http://dmoz.org/Bookmarks/ - PageRank 8 http://dmoz.org/Bookmarks/S/ - PageRank 7>> This is quite normal. Since you have the Google Toolbar click on http://dmoz.org/Bookmarks/ or http://dmoz.org/Bookmarks/S/. Now click on Page Info from the Google Toolbar and select "Cached Snapshot of the Page". You will see that Google does "Not" cache these areas of dmoz. If these pages were cached they would probably pick up an extra point of PR value on the toolbar. What you are seeing for PR is an "estimated" value Google assigns based upon the PR value assigned to the root domain. If you notice many times the lower you go or deeper from the root domain the PR starts to drop by one. Hence, http://dmoz.org/Bookmarks/S/ = PageRank 7 and one level below http://dmoz.org/Bookmarks/S/sabre23t/ = PageRank 6 . I hope this explains things Dave
9. Congrats and have fun There is a great deal of help/information available in the internal editor forums. Dave
10. windharp, No way to change the date format in personal settings etc This was discussed here: http://www.resource-zone.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=tes&Number=6397&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
11. Since this is in bugs/features. I believe this is a "feature" showing dd/mm/yy
12. Just wanted to add by saying the “Designers” categories has just gone through a major re-categorization and it may be a little while. This is also a very spam ridden area of the directory and many sites have mirrors or are owned by the same company/person. This makes it take much longer than usual to list a company/site since they must be checked for mirrors etc. Question: Which site do you want listed http://www.tentacle.com/ or http://www.nj-web-design.com/ since they share the same phone number and are both web design businesses.
13. alnilam, <<At least that never happens.>> Don't ever say "never" Dave
14. Well done Dave
15. giz, <<A new feature introduced on 2002-08-18. To rate this thread, scroll down to the very bottom of this page, and there it is at the bottom left.>> Read my previous : "I have seen the "rate this thread" function - don't think I used it, but I know where it is" . Neil had answered my question Thanks, Dave
16. Nick, You may post in that area although I am at the bottom of the totem-pole so-to-speak and will not be able to help you I am not sure if you will receive a direct response but there is a lot of useful information contained in that area Dave
17. Neil, Thanks - Duh! You just earned a vote from me for answering that question
18. Nick, I don't see anything dismissive in totalxsive's response. He was stating "don't worry about it" Dave {edited} Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/Consumer_Electronics/Batteries has a very small amount of "unreviewed" so it will be a matter of an editor with privileges in that area to go in and review the sites. Not saying that your site will be listed, just stating the amount of unreviewed sites waiting.
19. I think this question falls under this thread title What are all the stars under different users names? Is this discussed elsewhere and I missed it? I have seen the "rate this thread" function - don't think I used it, but I know where it is? Is this run by the number of posts like: xx= star xxx= star star star Feel stupid but I thought I would ask since I have all these stars and not sure where they came from Dave
20. Paul, You will hear different opinions from different people but I have a little experience in this area. Yes, you can optimize a site to list very well for a couple products but being in shopping/sales you don't just want them to see your listing on top - you want them to buy something. Keep that in mind and this conversation is way off topic for the purpose of these forums so I will have to end this type of conversation Personal Opinion: Keep as many products and information on one site as humanly possible. Dave
21. minderson, To be honest I cannot answer that question as it is up to the editors in that part of the directory who are more experienced in your categories. I will say I have seen this happen in categories I edit in and I have refused to list their separate sites as it is the same company. Now I'll talk as a website owner and not as an editor: I would rather have one comprehensive site then five sites that are specialized. I could do that with a couple sites that I have, but I don't. Reasoning is that Google etc loves comprehensive sites and you will get more traffic to your one site then the five put together. Users also like a comprehensive sites in my opinion and do not like being referred to other sites to find what they want. That is why sites like Buy.com and Amazon keep people on their sites. My sites were all listed before I became an editor and their categories and descriptions have not and will not be changed by myself or by any request by me. Dave
22. <<Seems the Editors, not only you, seem to look at sites quickly>> Please read this thread before making assumptions about myself or most of the other editors: http://www.resource-zone.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=status&Number=4277&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=7&fpart=1 Edited to clarify my thoughts.
23. <<If I am misunderstanding the concept please fill me in.>> Can I ask you a couple of honest questions: If you created a domain and business name for each of your products would they all deserve a listing in the directory? Why would moving some of your products to a different domain be a wise decision and what is your reasoning - could it be to get twice the listings in dmoz or search engines or exactly how is this helping a customer/user? (You don't have to answer the questions above because they are honestly NOMB and I already know the answers) <<It is not fair to me as a businessman.>> dmoz was never intended to be put in place for the benefit of business. It has not and will not ever be as far as I can see. My 2-cents, Dave {edited} I agreed with your opinions on getting your other site listed and now I am wondering why people push the system until it breaks - then ask why
24. Driftwood, If you still fail to see why your site has taken this long and you still believe you have the answers to why - this thread can be closed as it is going nowhere I am editing in a category that has 11,477 unreviewed sites. This is just one small area of the directory. I have run my own business for over 20 years and I believe (although biased) that I've done a pretty good job. There are sites I am listing that make the time you have waited seem like days instead of weeks. I can see the "facts" are not going to change your mind so I will refrain to further contribution of this thread as you are judging the work of others that you have absolutely no clue about. When told you ignore the facts and go on complaining about “your” problem. Sorry but I will not take part in this any more than I have. Dave
