1. http://dmoz.org/ is working again.
2. Re: DMOZ is down http://dmoz.org/ is working again.
3. FTR, that list of IP addresses includes the servers (DNS, POP3, and SMTP) used by VSNL, but it apparently does not include other IPs assigned to VSNL customers while they are connected to the web. Whois lookups indicate that VSNL also controls 219.64.0.0 - 219.65.255.255 , 203.197.0.0 - 203.197.255.255 , and 203.199.0.0 - 203.199.255.255 , for example.
4. Message has been received and I've started handling the situation. Thanks to applied321 for helping us maintain the quality of the directory.
5. Yes, if ODP has a topical category in which a local business could qualify for listing, the site could be listed both in the Regional category and in the topical category.
6. You are correct in pointing out that the category is a list of local towing and recovery companies, few of which could possibly have national or international interest. Why, then, would you want your business to be listed in that category? Potential customers are far more likely to find the website for a local towing and recovery company if that website is listed in a Regional category for the area served by the company. Furthermore, sites for local businesses typically are reviewed more quickly when submitted to local categories than when they are submitted to categories like that one. BTW, from time to time ODP editors review categories like that "Towing and Recovery" category and disperse the contents to Regional.
7. Re-read the advice that hutcheson gave you.
8. The latest word from staff is that the edit side of the directory will be back "up" again some time tomorrow. The public side was working the last time I checked.
9. That's correct -- the editor side of dmoz is not working. Since egmanoj is not yet listed here as an editor, he cannot access the editor-only forum here, so this thread is serving a useful purpose. There probably are other editors here who are still listed only as "member." To change this situation, notify one of the forum administrators by posting in the thread noted in the previous post. They probably will not want to update your status until dmoz is working again, so they can verify your status as an editor.
10. As a general rule, the category that most needs YOU as an editor is the one that you are itching to build. If you know about the subject, are aware of some sites that are missing from the dmoz directory, and see other needed improvements in the category, THAT is the category that needs YOU. Hint: After you find the perfect category but before applying, do search the dmoz.org directory for the sites you would like to add. You might discover another category that more closely matches your interests.
11. Note that lack of reply *could* be due to an e-mail problem. There are sporadic reports of e-mail servers bouncing messages coming from the "dmoz.org" domain (for example, from time to time dmoz.org might be reported somewhere as an "open relay," meaning that it is a source of spam). Unfortunately, editors (including metas) don't see messages that are "returned to sender" at dmoz.
12. It's supposed to be fixed now.
13. If you have been thinking of applying to be an ODP editor, but you were confused by the application form, take heart. A brand new version of the form has been rolled out. We hope it will make the process clearer for everyone. Go to http://dmoz.org/ for details. Also, editors who resigned or had their log-ins expire now will be able to request reinstatement using a BRAND NEW reinstatement request form, at http://dmoz.org/reinstate.html
14. Re: A personal experience (former editor) Hi, wlauzon. It's been a long time... /images/icons/smile.gif When an editor who "timed out" or resigned wishes to be reinstated, the proper approach is to request reinstatement under your old name. Contact a meta editor by e-mail. An editor with an expired login name should not try to get a new login -- this is "verboten." Decisions on reinstatement will be based on review of your prior editing record and any other information you provide. Because things change over time, old editors may not be reinstated to all the categories they edited before. -- orlady
