Copy of our website listed in ODP
cjtripnewton replied to DianeV's topic in Quality Control Feedback
Diane, I had a similar experience and was instructed to go straight to the legal dept. at AOL. You can easily file a DMCA complaint with any search engine that is listing the copy of your site, and it will be removed shortly. Google's policy is to post a copy of every complaint they receive at ChillingEffects.org. The others don't do that. AlltheWeb DMCA: http://www.alltheweb.com/info/about/dmcapolicy.html Covers AlltheWeb and Lycos AltaVista: http://www.altavista.com/web/legal/copyright AOL: http://www.aol.com/copyright/infringement.html Covers DMOZ AskJeeves: http://www.askjeevesinc.com/docs/ajinc/legal/legal.html Covers AskJeeves and Teoma Google: http://www.google.com/dmca.html Getting a copy out of Google basically eliminates it from the web since Google feeds Yahoo!, AOL, Netscape, Alexa, iWon.com, Earthlink (when you select "The Web" as a search option), and Compuserve. LookSmart Directory and Search Results: http://aboutus.looksmart.com/corp.jhtml?page=terms MSN Search Engine: http://www.microsoft.com/info/cpyrtInfrg.htm Yahoo Directory: http://docs.yahoo.com/info/copyright/copyright.html Good luck. Try submitting to the directory branch which lists the businesses in your locality.

Re: DMOZ policies on advertising ? Shaman, You never know. There just might be some minors here. Can you just send your notes directly to dfy, since he seems to be responding to them? That way you won't have to post links to porn sites in this forum.

Why doesn't ODP have method of viewing status?
cjtripnewton replied to a topic in General Curlie Issues
A status report that tells whether the site is in, awaiting review, or rejected would be nice. There are lots of ideas like this circulated on the internal forums about how to improve the technology. Basically, the tech staff is overworked. DMOZ is what it is, a bunch of volunteers working with the tools they have at their disposal to build a useful resource. This very forum is a volunteer effort - this isn't paid for by AOL - DMOZ editors do it. The same goes for many of the tools we use on the inside. Eventually maybe someone will build the very tool you've described. Then again, maybe not. For now, this forum seems to work very well for people requesting updates. -
Not to worry. The site is awaiting review in the accessories cat. Check back after at least a month for status.

Hit reload a few times, or try it from a different browser. All the directory pages below that link have PageRank.

Revisit them now. The little green bars are back. It was probably a glitch (or is that glich?)

Just remember, the index.html isn't necessary. Just use http://www.geocities.com/westmanmb/ C. J. -
Send a private message to hutcheson or orlady, both of whom have posted in this thread.

Off topic I know, but: You could put "Softmine" in your title. That should have a dramatic impact on your rankings for the word. Right now you have "Home" as your title.

Please provide the category path in CLICKABLE URL format: e.g.: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/ . I.e., let us know where you submitted the site.

Strange - I get a "Page cannot be displayed" error when I try to visit http://www.windycityrentals.com .

submission status of www.thecanadiandrugs4less.com

In the future, please copy the url of the category and paste it into your inquiry, like this http://dmoz.org/Health/Pharmacy/Pharmacies/Discount_Pharmacies/ -
Jacob, I appreciate the time and effort you have put into building your directory of sites. I can't say for sure whether the suggestion I'm about to make will work, but I would try it if I were you, for your visitors. Please understand that this is not coming as advice from DMOZ, but from me personally. If I were you, I would add descriptions and detailed contact information to each organization in your directory, including phone, fax, email, and a contact name if you can track it down. In that way, your pages would be more of a useful destination, rather than a stopping point on the way to the useful destination. Describe what services are available at each of the organizations listed. Then go to the next level and provide the same kind of information about organizations that aren't on the web yet. There are plenty of helpful organizations out there that haven't built sites yet - if you directory were more than just a directory of sites, it would be much more likely to qualify for listing and would be more useful to your visitors. In addition, the task presents a terrific opportunity to make contact with many organizations and let them know about your project. After doing that, I would resubmit a couple of them to areas in DMOZ that would best benefit from the sites. Good luck, and keep up the good work.

http://www.cellular-phone-accessories-center.com
cjtripnewton replied to a topic in Site Submission Status
Re: http://www.cellular-phone-accessories-center.c uzs980 is right. As DMOZ editors it is not our job to prevent all listings just because a webmaster builds multiple sites. Our job is to list one site per business. That said, I have absolutely no comment on the specifics in this thread. I just think it is important to remind everyone that we are not the Internet police. Again, if you as an editor can do a search on Google and find that there are multiple sites that are very similar, it doesn't matter. What matters is when those sites are submitted to DMOZ. -
Kctipton is just doing his job, as you are trying to do yours. I can assure you that there is no chip. Please understand that and respect the intention of his post.

Listing still has old URL, tried updating...help?
cjtripnewton replied to a topic in General Curlie Issues
Re: Listing still has old URL, tried updating...he Cal, If you don't submit an update request, the description is extremely unlikely to be updated. If you do submit an update request, the description may be updated. As you can see from motsa's comments, it is certainly not guaranteed. -
Listing still has old URL, tried updating...help?
cjtripnewton replied to a topic in General Curlie Issues
Re: Listing still has old URL, tried updating...he Cal, Nice site. Since Motsa didn't update your description, you should go ahead and submit an update request for the description. Your site clearly shows that you provide web and graphic design services. -
Mark, Keep trying. Start with a small category. Become intimately familiar with all the guidelines. When you submit your three sites, write the titles and descriptions so that they (1) adhere strictly to the guidelines and (2) match the style of the other sites listed. The second part is critical. You must assimilate the rules, guidelines, and styles, and accomodate them. When you get it right, you will probably be accepted. Many editors have had to apply multiple times. I first applied in early 99 and wasn't accepted until late last year. C. J.

When you apply to become an editor, you will receive a form email stating that your application was received. If you have not received this email, then you should re-apply. The email must be replied to in order for your application to be processed. At a minimum, you must not make grammatical or mechanical errors when writing your application.
