I have been told recently that:

1. you can only list your site once - unless it qualifies for regional or its also available in another language.
2. you can only list the top level domain, (eg www.fishingisdull.com, not www.fishingisdull.com/no-really/pretty-pictures),

Apart from that, I see time and time again, that these are the only circumstances that you can submit to the open directory.

Today, just browsing, I found this:

Search: gamespy

Open Directory Categories (1-5 of 5)
Games: Video Games: Simulation: God Games: Sim Games (28 matches)

Games: Video Games: Action: M: Mega Man Games (15)

Kids and Teens: Games: Computer and Video: Sim Games (7)

Games: Video Games: Sports: Skateboarding: Tony Hawk Games: Pro Skater 3: Reviews and Previews (6)

Games: Video Games: Driving and Racing: Simulations: Need for Speed Series: Need for Speed Underground Series: Need for Speed Underground (6)

Open Directory Sites (1-20 of 1721)

Surely this contradicts all of what the Dmoz is about?

I keep being told that even though I am launching a US version of my website, I cannot list it seperately as 'the user should be able to find the US site from my main website" surely this is exactly the same situation, but where I wanted about 4 versions of my site, this organisation has over 1700!

I welcome your thoughts.

Another one with 1520 seperate listings

I just did another search and found the following:

Search: ign.com

Open Directory Categories (1-5 of 5)
Games: Video Games: Roleplaying: News and Reviews (1 match)

Games: Video Games: Action-Adventure: Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (2)

Games: Video Games: Roleplaying: Dungeons & Dragons Games: Icewind Dale Series: Icewind Dale (3)

Games: Video Games: Console Platforms: Nintendo: Nintendo 64 (1)

Games: Video Games: Console Platforms: Nintendo: Game Boy (1)

Open Directory Sites (1-20 of 1520)

There were at least 6 of these sites that were voted 'Cool Sites' (the ones with the stars next to them).

Any ideas?

There are many sites in the ODP that have multiple listings *at the discretion of the editors*. You've been told yours isn't one of those. You need to move on and stop worrying about what other sites are doing in the ODP (you've been told that before as well). Please stop posting here complaining about other sites.

Have I lost the plot?
Yes, you have.

<previous post removed>

When an innocent and helpful volunteer is attacked, I will NOT have it said of me,

"On the day that you stood aloof,
On the day that strangers blasted his name,
And foreigners entered his gate
And cast refuse on his reputation,
You too were as one of them."

I will NOT stand aloof, I will NOT act as if nothing is wrong, I will keep silence, I will NOT tolerate.

Refer to motsa's answer, which I consider accurate, helpful, to the point, and comprehensive.

You may suggest only one listing for a site (with the standard exceptions for world vs. regional and for multiple languages). Editors may create multiple listings for different parts of an especially useful site, at their initiative and discretion.

Deeplinks are allowed "in exceptional circumstances". A site that has, in the editor's judgment, the best content in multiple categories is pretty exceptional, no?

Lobbying for your own site is not at all exceptional. Or at all acceptable. Just don't. It will be counterproductive at best.

I find the comments of Motsa somewhat patronising, however I accept and respect your more understanding comments.

Its true that these sites are superb, and far superior to anything I could come up with, but what I was asking was how is this so. Motsa has come back with the rather impertinant comments that help no-one.

At no point have I been lobbying my site on this thread, I simply wanted a question answered, which you have kindly done.

Thanks,

Simon

Sir: I retract all my comments, and heartily commend motsa's: with which I fully concur.

<added>I understand from your private post that you do not feel you deserved to get slapped down. I disagree. Strongly. I think you owe motsa an apology. And I won't carry on a private discussion under such circumstances.
