Just two questions I couldn't find answers to in the documentation:

1. What does the number in parentheses appearing after the category represent? I would have guessed the number of sites in that category or in that category and its subcategories, but neither seems to be the case. More broadly I would be thankful for a legend defining the different areas of a typical category page.

2. I have a site in Spanish with a local focus, but for outsiders. In the instructions I read: "If your site is focused on a specific regional area, you may submit your site to both a subject category, and a category in the Regional branch." Does this refer only to the Regional category that appears on www.dmoz.com, or does it also mean that I am allowed to submit within the world category both to the locality category as well as in a more specific category in terms of the business my site is in?

Many thanks,

(1) The number of sites in that category, including all descendent categories, but NOT including "virtual" subcategories (ones prefixed with a "@" character.) This is not always a meaningful datum, but it IS always a well-defined datum.

(2) Consider the submittal policy you cite, to apply separately to each language -- that is, submittals in English categories do not preclude submittals in World/Swahili for multilingual sites.

Thank you Hutcheson. Taking your answers in consideration may I ask further:

(1) Where may I read about virtual subcategories to find out what they are?

(2) I wasn't considering submitting my Spanish-language site to any category in the English section, but may I submit it to two subcategories of World/Español, one being the locality (town), and the other being more specifically descriptive of what the site does (tourist services)?

Many thanks.

The *virtual* sub-categories hutcheson mentioned (and noted are those that contain the "@") act like sub-cats to a particular category but really are links to a sub-cat in a related category. The Glossary may help explain more.

Hope that helps clarify a bit

For sites that are inherently local (services offered in a particular place), generally only the Regional listing is applicable. For sites that are inherently global (Santa Claus Delivery Services, which has an office somewhere that doesn't really matter), only a Topical listing is applicable. For sites that have a specific local focus AND some kind of global interest, both are applicable.

Tourist services, like flower shops, groceries, real estate agents, masseurs, etc. -- businesses that are (1) so common worldwide that a topical listing of them would be unwieldy and useless, and (2) so emphatically local that global interest is nil -- only a Regional listing is appropriate.
