I am trying to select the most appropriate category in which to submit my new website, and I am unable to decide whether I should include it in the 'Advaita Vedanta' category (Top: Society: Religion and Spirituality: Advaita Vedanta) or the 'Ramana Maharshi' category (Top: Society: Religion and Spirituality: Hinduism: Gurus and Saints: Ramana Maharshi).
The reason why I find this a difficult decision to make is I feel that the 'Ramana Maharshi' category would be more appropriately included within the 'Advaita Vedanta' category than within its present category 'Hinduism: Gurus and Saints', because the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi are a spiritual philosophy that cannot be confined only within the religion called 'Hinduism'. This is reflected in the fact that if one does a search in dmoz for the word 'Ramana', it shows 17 matches in the 'Ramana Maharshi' category and 26 matches in the 'Advaita Vedanta' category.
If I were navigating through the categories looking for websites about the spiritual philosophy of Sri Ramana, when I came to the page 'Top: Society: Religion and Spirituality' (http://dmoz.org/Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/) I would expect to find such websites listed in the 'Advaita Vedanta' category rather than in the 'Hinduism' category, and I am sure many other people would feel the same way.
On a more general level, I notice that the 'Advaita Vedanta' category is listed only in the 'Religion and Spirituality' category (http://dmoz.org/Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/), and not in the 'Philosophy' category (http://dmoz.org/Society/Philosophy/), so if anyone searches for 'Advaita Vedanta' in the 'Eastern Philosophy' category (http://dmoz.org/Society/Philosophy/Eastern_Philosophy/) or even in the more specific 'Indian Philosophy' category (http://dmoz.org/Society/Philosophy/Eastern_Philosophy/Indian_Philosophy/), there is no mention of Advaita Vedanta.
Since Advaita Vedanta is one of the major forms of Eastern Philosophy, and probably the most respected form of Indian Philosophy, the fact that it is not included in the 'Philosophy' category appears inappropriate. I would therefore suggest that the 'Advaita Vedanta' category should be included in the 'Indian Philosophy' category, and that the 'Ramana Maharshi' category should be included in the 'Advaita Vedanta' category. A reference could then be given in the categories in which these are now included to the categories in which they are newly included.
Having made this suggestion, I would in the meanwhile appreciate if any editor could advise me whether I should submit my site, which is about the philosophy and practice of Advaita Vedanta in general and of the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi in particular, in either the 'Advaita Vedanta' category or the 'Ramana Maharshi' category.
Warm regards,
Michael James
