Ok, I'm not that frustrated but pretty close to it :D

I've been attempting to get a pretty large and useful community web site (850,000 posts and over 36,000 members) listed in the "Obesity Surgery" category for over two years without any results.

I've followed the submission guidelines and have waited patiently over the years.

The category doesn't have an editor but I know that really only delays things a little.

It would be a really good idea to allow users who submit a url to check in on the status of their submission. I'd love to understand what that option isn't in place yet.

Thank you for letting me vent lol.

We used to offer a brief status report as to whether a suggestion was received and awaiting review or not but it didn't solve anything. Indeed it often led to tense if not outright angry threads so status reports were discontinued almost exactly three years ago. You can find out more in this FAQ entry

Sorry, but this forum is only about DMOZ, a directory and not a search engine.
DMOZ doesn't use any ranking at all.

But editors (may) do!
The easiest way to avaluate site is check it PR or alexa rank.
:p
Where can editor find a new site - on search engine.

No, editors do not rank websites in any way. The listings in the directory are classified into categories by content, and within each category the listings are alphabetical. Most editors pay no attention whatsoever to page rank or alexa rankings (indeed, many of us aren't even aware of what page rank a web site has).

So this is all irrelevant to the Open Directory.

There are lot of places we can find new sites to list.
Just to name a few

Local newspaper - good source, real local business to be put in Regional and sometimes under a topical category
Walking / riding the streets (text on cars, billboards, storefronts) - good source, real local business to be put in Regional and sometimes under a topical category
Links on other sites - when you have found a listable site just look at the sites it links to, most of them are also listable - reasonable good source for all type of categories
Search engines / directories - always handy to start a new category or make a small one bigger
Suggested sites - not so good a source, many suggested sites are not listable, are suggested to the wrong category or already listed

And I am sure some of my fellow editors will use other sources I just did not think of at this moment.
