Access troubles...

I have been having a lot of trouble lately in accessing ODP including its mirror ch.dmoz.org. Either I get the response that its under heavy workload or I just can't access it. Given the lack of editors for some of the regional categories (Algarve - Portugal) I have tried to apply for it but to no avail for the same reasons. I hope some major upgarde is going on as otherwise this affects your credibility very seriously. Being part of such a big and profitable corporation as AOL / Time Warner surely some provision should be make to assist the ODP as it is such a great project.

The complete server upgrade that is currently underway is more than adequately documented in many threads on this forum. Please be patient - it's frustrating for us all....

That's probably because you're trying to use the search engine from ch.dmoz.org. The search index is not located on the mirror but on dmoz.org. Only the directory is mirrored.

And no, we volunteer editors cannot commit to a given date for the upgrades and software changes to be completed. First, it's pretty complex, and second, it's not in any editor's hands, this is done by ODP staff.

There have been hints that we are looking at maybe several months rather than only days or weeks for this timescale.

I dunno when DMOZ will speed up, but hang in there, it has been promised that it will.

When you think about it, credibility isn't really an issue - who else does what the Open Directory Project does?

I'm really happy to hear you are attempting to become an editor for the Algarve. The people there are charming and friendly, the culture is ancient and fascinating, the food is great and the countryside is awsome. It deserves a little tender loving care. Good luck with your application.

Just wondering, why the mirrors don't have the search index also?

I believe that's on their to-do list (there's a post around here somewhere...or possibly on another forum...that referenced that fact but I can't remember where that was).

The ODP itself runs the search engine on several servers, due to the heavy requirements the current searchengine has. There were plans to put search on the mirrors, too - but I think they would have to switch to a heavily optimized searchengine before. And I won't expect that to happen soon.
