Hello,

I took an interset in the ODP over a year ago. I found a category, applied for it and was declined. I was pretty gutted. I had the generic rejection letter and I believe it was because I never put enough thought into the application and didn't fully read and understand the FAQ and Guidelines.

I left it for around a year and tried again the other day. I spent hours reading through posts in this forum. As you will see, there are literally hundreds asking why they have been declined and in most they refer to the FAQ mentioned above, they also talk about a professional well written application.

I took it all on board and applied for a regional category. I wrote my application as is if it were a job application, I read through it several times checking for typos and rewording to make is sounded professional. I got an email and it was declined... AGAIN, but I read the advice given by the reviewer and acted in it... I narrowed my category down and found what I considered to be three quality sites.

I changed my application to the category of my local town and gave an valid honest reason for wanting it... an email arrived last night stating I have been successful. (WOO HOO). I am no spring chicken, but I have a serious excitement about this new post.
My category is Glenrothes in Scotland, my home town

My advice to those looking to apply... be straight and honest and as the guidelines state... write your application properly... remember, this is more or less a job and the application should be treated as such. Take time to read and FULLY understand the FAQ. Take some time to read the posts in this forum... all 130+ pages if needed... and if you're declined, look at the feedback, understand it and go for it again acting on the advice given.

sorry for rambling on a bit, there are many post asking why they had been declined so I thought I'd change the tone a bit... anyway, I look forward to my future with the ODP and will try my very best to make any category I am associated with successful.

thanks for reading :)

Thank-you... I would just like to add...

I now fully understand why new editors should take small categories... there is a mountain of information to go through before trying to carry out any edits. To begin with there is a bit of a steep learning curve and a lot of jargon to get your head around... thankfully there is a great community and more tutorials than I could mention :)

edited -- I would like to add, I have a Masters Degree in Design and Digital Media which includes web development and I was quite overwhelmed by the amount of information to take in.... its certainly not for the faint hearted.
