Application form

Very recently I decided to apply to become an editor. I read all the information and started to complete the application form but when I reached the area near the end, asking for sites to submit, I was unsure of how to proceed. Do I just complete details of the sites which I think are suitable for that category, regardless of whether they are currently included in DMOZ, or do I need to check whether they are included first? Also, I do have an interest in the category I have chosen, would it be OK to submit one of my own sites at that stage or not? I can't find any references to this in the FAQ etc.

For your example URLs you should not use sites that are already listed in the directory. The point of the example section is to show us that you can find appropriate URLs for the category and are able to write titles and descriptions that are somewhat compliant with our guidelines. You should read the FAQ and General Advice thread, and the documents that it refers to.

You can check if a site is in DMOZ by entering the last part of the url into the search. For example enter xyz.com - it shows two results, one because there really is a www.xyz.com and it's listed, and another because that phrase is used in the description of another URL.

See if the sites you find are in the category you are applying for - if they are in a different category ask yourself why.

You may include sites that you are affiliated with on your application, however, be sure to disclose your relationship with them. Also, be sure they actually fit in the category you are applying for. :)

I'm not a meta, but it also seems to me that he could submit sites in his/her application which are already in the ODP, if the suggested location is better (due to change of content since review), or if, for some reason, the site could be listed in both categories.

I haven't checked the public guidelines lately, but I think the fact that a site can be listed in a totpical and a Regional category is public.

I don't know if most metas are like me in this (note that I don't do many new apps right now because I rarely have enough of a block of time for it), but I would prefer new URLs. Don't think I can really explain why. But I think applicants would be better off searching for new URLs that fit into the category. :monacle:

From having been on the application side of things, the search for new urls is the most valuable part of the process. It gives the applicant an idea of what is or is not out there to be added, and whether or not they really like the topic. :2cents:
