In my experience the community is insatiably curious -- so it gives respect to anyone who offers real information -- and is very good at respecting genuine achievement of a public-spirited kind (that is, any kind of giving to society as opposed to successful predation on society.)
Generally, a person reveals pretty quickly whether he's driven by selfish motives, or genuinely wants to help. And in an information-rich environment, the peddlars (who know nothing and learn nothing, but keep trying to push editors' buttons with cheap marketroid tricks to get their way) reveal themselves pretty quickly also. Likewise, the ignorant busybodies, who don't do anything themselves but are always ready to tell other people what to do.
That's a lot of people who wouldn't find editors' company congenial. And that's OK, there's no reason for them to put up with editors. Or vice versa.
