been waiting to be added for almost a year

I've submitted MNBilliards.com 2-3 times since March 2002, with no word.

The category I was trying to submit to is:
http://dmoz.org/Sports/Billiards/ . Even one of my old (outdated) competitors is listed: TCBilliards.com

One time, however, I got an autoreply from the editor's Yahoo account. It was a college student from the UK, in the autoresponder stating that he no longer had access to a computer, and to not to expect any response for awhile.

That will be a year in April.

I've sent notes on through the comments forms on Dmoz.org, but have heard nothing back.

Can someone please help?

Thank you,
Kelly Larson

Your site is waiting for review in that category. The submission was sent on october 5th; any earlier submissions must have been erased by newer ones. There are some dozens of sites waiting for review in that category; let's hope some editor with time and knowledge of the topic will soon come to it.

You may also submit your site to the appropriate regional category, Regional: North America: United States: Minnesota: Recreation and Sports. This submission will not affect your chances in the other category, as "topical" and "regional" submissions are considered separately.

Yours,
Robert

Thank you for replying

That's the first I've heard.

I've applied to be an editor for this category, as the listings are very limited. I know it's awkward to apply as an editor when you own a site in a specific category, but I'd be very willing and motivated to keep it up.

I've been denied twice at the Sports->Billiards level. Awhile back I applied for a smaller category, but heard nothing back.

I'm very willing to help, but can't seem to get any response or traction. Any advice?

Re: Thank you for replying

the Sports/Billiards level is too large a category for a new editor to normally be accepted to. The Minnesoat Regional category unfortunately doesn't have a Billards subcategory to apply to (but you could still submit your site to the general area). I suggest you apply to edit Sports/Billiards/Players/ or Sports/Billiards/News_and_Media or Sports/Billiards/Tournament_Play/. Find three appropriate sites, write good descriptions, disclose your associations, and you likely should have no problem getting one of these categories. After you are accepted and familarize yourself with the inner workings of the directory it should not be long before you could apply to the higher /Billiards category (assuming you don't stink as an editor...). Don't be put off by the tininess of a starting category. It is just a start.

But what happens if there's no editor?

What if there are no billiards editors working? Because of the critical dependancy to other search engine results, link popularity, etc., it's really an advantage/critical necessity to be listed in ODP. How long can a site sit there before it's escalated (hopefully) to higher powers, because there are no editors at the helm?

Who does it if there are no editors?

Re: But what happens if there's no editor?

If a category has no listed editorsa for itself, all the editors of higher level categories can edit there. And 250+ Editors who can edit in the whole directory.

For listing times: They can vary between "listed some minutes after submission" until "still not listed after several years". Sometimes I encounter a submission that dates back to 1999. In a directory like the ODP - based on voluntary work only - this cant be controlled and review times can not be guaranteed.

For the common "But I need a listing for my PR". Might be. Be advised, that serious SEO guys say a listing in ODP should be treated as a bonus, and is not necessary for optimizing a site. Remember that the ODP does not care, what google does with the data we provide. Even if google would drop the ODP, we wouldnt stop working on it. In fact it would be a great relieve, since the spam submissions would be reduced to a much lower level.

There are no higher powers who deal with individual site listings. It's just editors, some with access to more of the directory than others. There isn't a management to complain to, we are self-managed. There isn't a "they", it's just "us".

>>Who does it if there are no editors?<<

We do our best, but there is a huge backlog in general. Some areas of the directory have better coverage (more interested editors) but some areas do not have enough experts available or are so constantly immersed in misplaced submissions and spam, sites practically cannot be reviewed. If you want to help, apply to be an editor. Otherwise, you'll just have to wait and hope others do.

larsonkl,

I've wittled down some of the backlog to http://dmoz.org/Sports/Billiards and your site should be listed in the coming weeks.

FYI, and anyone else who's reading. Alot of the backlog is due to misplaced sites sent to Sports/Billiards. Local "pool halls and centers" should _only_ be submitted to the proper locality within the http://dmoz.org/Regional/ branch. Also, billiard and pool-related sales, service, moving and refurb maintenance companies are not listed in Sports/Billiards and only listed at the local level in Regional.

For members and editors reading this thread, in _Most All_ areas of the Sports/ branch, we do not accept 'local businesses that sell, service, lease or rent equipment, accessories or the main 'item' of a sport. All these sites are forwarded to Regional or if appropriate, Shopping/ branch provided they offer 'online shopping' (i.e., pricing plus online, phone, fax or email ordering instructions), along with related guidelines.

djharrity, any new status?

Hi djharrity,

Is MNBilliards.com going to be listed soon?

Re: djharrity, any new status?

I suppose you didn't have a look at Sports/Billards, because otherwise you would have noticed that your site is listed there.
