Hello there,

can anyone please change the description of my website?

The DMOZ-description can be found under the link to my website at Google, if you type "Jendrik de Ruvo".

It goes:

"The DJ und producer from Flensburg gives an overview of remixes and releases.
Words from the press are published."

I don't live in Flensburg and besides that: I want Google to show my personal information/text that I added into the Meta in the HTML-document.

Please change it into the ORIGINAL Meta (as it was online some few months ago):

"description" content="Jendrik de Ruvo - DJ and producer of electronic dance music from Germany. Acts: Nicci Versaci, J.Ru, Wavepushers, Cosmic Cover, Pimp Headz and many more"

"abstract" content="Your trip through drums and percussions"

This is really important for me.

Thank you very much in advance plus have a nice day!

Kind regads,
Jendrik de Ruvo

Jendrik,

Have you tried going through the "official" method of getting a listing changed?

Go to the ODP category where your site is listed (it should start with http://dmoz.org ) and click on the "Update listing" button at the top right of the page. This will allow you to propose a new updated description. If in the resaons box you post a link to this forum message, it will save you typing it all again.

This will get reviewed by an editor.

Thanks,
Alucard

What you are describing is not a quality control issue.

If the title and description of your site are factually inaccurate then go to the category where the site is listed and submit an update request.

But before you do, spend some quality time with our editing guidelines, since it appears that what you are requesting it totally inconsistent with what we do.

We do not care about META statements, and are under no oblication to follow your abstract. What we do is write titles and description that comply with our guidelines, and we give absolutely no consideration to what Google may or may not do with our data.

If, in fact, you are not physically located in Flensburg, then you can request a change, but the overly broad Germany will not be sufficient, and whatever claim of residence you do make will need to be supported within the pages of the website.

....in his hometown Flensburg
- but I guess you are not there any more

DJ und producer -> DJ and producer - was fixed by another editor - allow a few days before you see that change

You should spend some energy fixing your site HTML - it does not work in Firefox - so you lose a large number of viewers.

Hello there,

thank you for your feedback and help.

Alucard:
"click on the "Update listing" button at the top right of the page."

I can't find this button at dmoz.org!

Bobrat:
Correct. I don't live in Flensburg anymore. And I also don't want people to know where I am currently living.
Firefox: I know. My site is using frames and it looks awful if you would be able to view the site with Mozilla, Firefox and/or Netscape. So I decided to lock these browsers. It was a hard, tough decission. But you see.. I don't want people to associate my production company with an terrible, frame-displaced website (nor with wrong descriptions :).

Spectregunner:
"We do not care about META statements":

Of course not and I have not requested an review to receive an better PageRank. I am satisfied with my position.
It is hard for me to explain it an foreign language.. but "The DJ und producer from Flensburg gives an overview of remixes and releases. Words from the press are published."... excause me but that's not me nor my style of typing an description of my personal homepage or me as an artist. I don't want people to read this.

"we give absolutely no consideration to what Google may or may not do with our data.":

Okay, but you know that Google works this way.
How can I delete the complete entry/link at DMOZ if no one agrees to change the description?

Thoughtfully: I don't know where all you guys are living but it's an German domain and I am responsible
for the whole content. It's really strange that a community/company/people are allowed to change my personal informations. Under which legal basis? Don't get me wrong here, I'm not bitching around and I think it is a smart and helpful service but this is a crazy system. How can someone tell how to breath right! :)

Thank you very much for your time and energy!

It is there.
Go to http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Germany/Arts_and_Entertainment/Music/DJs/
almost at the top you see
"about dmoz | suggest URL | update listing | become an editor | report abuse/spam | help"
Click 'update listing' and fill in the form

You can't. We list site we think are worthwhile for our customers and we describe them in the way we think is appropriate. But if there is an error (like possible in this case) we will change the description.

http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Germany/Arts_and_Entertainment/Music/DJs/
And I also don't want people to know where I am currently living.
Regional wants to know where you conduct your 'business' it doesn't have to be the apartment/street number.
Firefox: I know.
The ODP is probably one of the higher concentrations of non IE browsers, expect it to slow down acceptance of your site by eliminating a section of the editing population.
I don't want people to read this.
Not your choice, a human looked at the site and described it within the guidelines. Paraphrased 'What does the business/person do (and who/what are they), what is on the site that is uniquely about the business/person.'
Okay, but you know that Google works this way.
No, I don't, and I don't care, it's Google you need to challenge about their use of what we do.
How can I delete the complete entry/link at DMOZ if no one agrees to change the description?
You can take the site offline, or password protect it. You cannot ask for a site not to be linked to from anywhere.
it's an German domain and I am responsible for the whole content.
dmoz.org is not a German site and we are responsible for our site, you are not responsible for what appears on our site, anymore than we are responsible for what is on your site.
It's really strange that a community/company/people are allowed to change my personal informations.
We are not changing your details - your site remains unaltered - the only thing we do is create a description of the site contents and a link to your site.

Hello there again,

DMOZ changed my META-description. Google is using it instead of mine.

Don't you think DMOZ/Google Inc. would get sued if they would write:

MERCEDES-BENZ
The company from Germany is giving an overview of their cars.
A pricelist is published.
www.mercedes-benz.de

and Google would use this description?! The answer is yes.

Sure, DMOZ can use their own description for their own link-list! I would'nt even care if they would write:

DERUVO.DE MUSIC PRODUCTIONS
The idiot from Germany is not able to write grammatical correct English.
A funny picture from this brat is added.
www.deruvo.de

But I want Google to use my own description.

Let's cut it short: What can I (really) do? Write an letter to Mr. Google Inc.? :)

Thanks again + best wishes,
Jendrik

We (DMOZ and its editors) can do totaly nothing about how Google is presenting the information.

We haven't touched your meta description - that is part of your site. Whether Google use your meta description or a description from anywhere else is a matter for you to take up with Google. We are not Google and have no influence over them! I would speculate that Google don't trust meta descriptions on sites if the text does not seem relevant to the meta description but you'll get much better advice on that sort of thing from one of the many webmaster forums that are out there.
