The short answer to that question is: no.

The long answer is: Some websites do qualify for multiple listings, however if these apply to your website then when an editor reviews your website then they will send a copy to all appropriate categories. You should submit your website once and once only to the single most appropriate category.

If you later find that you submitted to the wrong category then don't resubmit - when your website is reviewed the editor will send it to the correct category. Your website will still get reviewed it will just take longer.

The only exception to this is if you have a website that is translated in to multiple languages (human translated not machine translated). In this case you may also submit your website to the appropriate World/ category for each language you support.

Short answer is no. That's what http://dmoz.org/add.html says and you agree to that whenever you make a listing suggestion.

There are exceptions though.

If you have a regional presence, you can also suggest your site to the locality.

If your website is in multiple languages (not machine translated), you can suggest the root URL to appropriate categories within http://dmoz.org/World .

The volunteer who process a suggestion might send it to other categories too, but that's at his/her option, not yours.

multiple categories

1. So the editors look that closely at the website to see if its service applies to several categories?

2. If the editors happen to miss the multiple nature, is there a way to bring it to their attention later?

3. For example, the listing I want to make could apply to 4 categories: Automobile insurance claims in personal and business categories, and Property insurance claims in homeowners and business categories. (I even have a 5th category for Marine insurance claims, and a 6th category for miscellaneous insurance claims issues). My website gives information, like consumer reports, to policy holders on how to effectively negotiate various kinds of insurance claims.

If I have missed one appropriate category that covers it all, please advise. thanks much

multiple categories

You suggested I select a "business" category.

1. So is the Open Directory more to catalog by the website creator than by the service it provides?

2. I anticipate that most of the searches for the info. on my website will be from individual consumers like auto and homeowners, not from businesses. With that in mind, do you still recommend I start with "Business/Financial_Services/Insurance/Claims/" ?

I just want to be sure, since as I understand it, the major search engines also look at ODP.

Thanks much.

No, suggest to 1 cat, then it´s up to the editors to decide if it could be listed in more. You could make a comment about which categories you think may apply though.
