Category Consistency

I've previously submitted a number of sites to ODP which have not (so far) appeared in the directory.

My suspicion is that they may have been rejected for inadvertently being submitted to the wrong category ( some are regional).

I try to submit to the correct category by comparing similar sites, but then I find that there is no "mirrored" directory structure for my country.

This inconsistency may be the cause of failed listings.

Perhaps it's time for a clean-up of the categories?

Whilst there is a certain amopunt of cross language consistency in category structures, they are not always identical. In addition for languages with a smaller number of listings the structures may not be fully built out. In these cases the sites are listed at the lowest level of category that does exist, until such time as they are broken down further (either by topic or location depending on the section of the directory you are looking at).

My suspicion is that they may have been rejected for inadvertently being submitted to the wrong category
It is possible if you have been egregiously abusing the system (suggesting them all to the same category at Country level for instance), but generally sites are moved to the correct category when found in the wrong place. They may not be listed at that time though, so the wait can be considerably longer for incorrectly suggested sites that correctly suggested ones - see http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=41558 .

I'm not talking language here, but country.
For example

Society/Gay,_Lesbian,_and_Bisexual/Travel/Destinations/Europe/

Has seperate categories for some countries and not others, and some of those countries are actually empty (Portugal) or have only one entry (Russia). The country in which I live (Belgium) is not even listed.

This is very inconsistent.

We only create subcategories when we have sufficient websites to put in them. Until then, websites are listed in the parent category.

The empty or very small categories were almost certainly created when there were more sites to put in them; because the editor population varies, so does the coverage of areas that are actively edited (because all people have different interests). And so it can happen that categories become empty, because all the sites that used to be listed have disappeared from the Internet, and nobody has been sufficiently interested in the subject to build the category again with new, existing sites.

Actually, looking at Society/Gay,_Lesbian,_and_Bisexual/Travel/Destinations/Europe/ , because all sites are currently listed in country-specific categories, I would create new subcategories even for only a few sites. [This is my off-the-cuff reflection, mind you - I could be completely wrong about this]. But in any case we wouldn't create country categories unless there is at least one site to list there.
