Category in serious need of an update, dead links, no mod, etc.

Category: Shopping > Clothing > Casual > T-Shirts > Humor

There is no moderator, editor applications are disabled for the category, and many of the old links don't even have sites on them anymore - they are redirecting to irrelevant pages, error messages and parked domains.

Can someone please consider getting around to editing this page, removing all the dead links, and adding my site. I've probably been trying to get listed for about 3 years now. I was previously listed on DMOZ but had to change URL after the free host removed my site. Email me for the link.

ODP is a volunteer organisation building a directory as a hobby. Editors edit where they wish, when they wish and as much as they wish within the constraints of their permissions. We have no schedules or systems to force people to do work that they don't volunteer to do. ODP is not primarily a free listing service for website owners and it does not attempt to process their listing suggestions within the time scales desired by them.

We have over a million categories and only around 6500 editors - half of whom work in languages other than English. Posting here is very unlikely to adjust their chosen priorities.

Some volunteer will process your listing suggestion in time but we can't predict who or when that might be. Elapsed times can range from a few days to a few years. There is no need to re-suggest your website and doing so could be counter-productive because a later suggestion overwrites any earlier one.

Incidentally, no category is without an editor. Some 200 of us can edit wherever we wish - and we do.

Shopping/Clothing/Casual/T-Shirts/Humor has a huge number of websites awaiting evaluation and is far too daunting for a new editor. That's why applications are disabled. Meanwhile, the category currently has 55 listings so surfers are already spoiled for choice.

Lastly, if you're aware of broken links in the category, please report them in this forum and somebody will likely attend to them.

Good to know all categories have editors available...

Here are the problem links on
http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Clothing/Casual/T-Shirts/Humor/
--------------------------------------------------------------
Big Fat Meanie Head - No longer has any content, new url.
Digital Basement LLC - Need to update the title to Snorg Tees.
Loiter Ink - Seems to be in wrong category, and site is not loading for me.
Masshole Proshop - Dead link - 404 error page.

I was looking at two different categories and there are more problem pages on the main t-shirt category:

http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Clothing/Casual/T-Shirts/

-------------------------------------------------------
13 beyond - Dead Link with no content.
Animation Arthouse - Page has moved to a new url.
Answer King - Dead link - Site has been suspended.
Big D Design's - Content no longer matching description, Seems to be listed in wrong category.
K Adorable - Dead Link - No Content.
Mental Peace - Has a new url now.
Kitty Keller - Content no longer matching description, Seems to be listed in wrong category.
Smoggy Mountain - Seems to be listed in the wrong category.
Tao of the Doodle - Where are the the shirts? I see none on the site. Seems to be listed in the wrong category.
The Walker Project - Seems to be listed in the wrong category.
Wanderlist - Old angelfire page with no content.
World of Wassco - Graphic design portfolio - Listed in wrong category.

If any editor feels like fixing all these errors on the dmoz directory some time soon, please would you also add a new link <URL removed> to whatever category you think is most appropriate, thank you in advance.

Oh... how nice... I didn't post a URL there either, it was just the name of the site (ie: name.com).

Which is still identifying information about the site (and technically, if the site name is name.com, then it's the same as the URL). We appreciate you reporting problems with the categories, but that doesn't -- can't -- fast track your own site for listing, which is why the identifying information was removed.

Just clarifying so it didn't look as if I was spamming the forum with a link. Thanks for the explanation, that sounds fair.

I have a few questions, if anyone is willing to answer some or all of them would be a lot of help...

How many other websites are there waiting for evaluation in this category? (tshirts/humor)

What is the average wait time for getting evaluated in this category? 8 and a half years? 217 years?

Is my site even in the list for evaluating? I have submitted multiple times over the years, and any update to the description is the latest and most relevant.

Do you know how long most sites have to wait to be listed on dmoz on average? (I assume some of you have access to this kind of data).

Is there another category that is updated more regularly, that is relevant that you can suggest?

Are no dmoz editors are interested in jokes or humor? A lot of the sites listed look like they were added many years ago...

We don't give out that information

*If* it was something we could actually know, it's likely not something we could give out. But the fact of the matter is that it isn't a piece of information we even have. We have no way of knowing when an editor will (a) choose to edit that category, (B) choose to review sites suggested to that category, and (c) choose to review any specific suggested site. Past editor activity does not tell us anything about future editor activity there. The only timeframe we can give is "eventually".

Is my site even in the list for evaluating? I have submitted multiple times over the years, and any update to the description is the latest and most relevant.
We don't give status information for specific sites.

We don't have that kind of data. The timeframes range from less than zero (for sites that have never been suggested but were found and listed by editors) to never (for sites that have been suggested but aren't listable). Any average timeframe we could give you within those extremes would be useless.

Is there another category that is updated more regularly, that is relevant that you can suggest?
You should suggest your site to the category that is most appropriate -- there is generally only one. Suggesting your site to the wrong category will just add to whatever wait time you're already looking at since an editor will have to then move your site for review in the right category.

Are no dmoz editors are interested in jokes or humor? A lot of the sites listed look like they were added many years ago...
If the category hasn't been edited in some time, then the likely answer is no, no editor has found the category interesting recently.

We have around 6500 editors, all of whom are working in areas that interest them. They are a diverse bunch and could be said to represent the surfing population as a whole.

If none of them choose to work in funny T-shirts, that might tell you something about the category's importance in the overall scheme of things :).

Seriously, focus on other means of promoting your website and don't fret about DMOZ. If it's eventually listed here, that'll be a bonus. However, we think it's unlikely to lead to a huge leap in its search rankings or a big surge of hits. It might have been true last century, but it isn't now.
