Hi All

I have been submitting my site to a category for two years now and I have noticed at the bottom of the page >>

Last update: 2:24 PT, Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Is this normal :icon_ques

It all depends on the category really. That date usually gets updated when a site is added, edited, or updated. It also will change when the category charter is modified, etc.

Seeing that date would tell me that it is possible that it may not be a very active area compaired to some of the other categories. Is the category rather small in size? Maybe you can apply to edit in that area to help develop it some. :)

Hello Firestorm

Thank you for the reply.:)

You are correct it is only a small category "Guides and Directories" with 11 links within.

Maybe you can apply to edit in that area to help develop it some.

I would not mind becoming an editor for that category and maybe another Very similar category.

But it would be seen as I am only doing so to get my link listed, to me that is unfair.

I would welcome Information via pm on becoming an editor to see what it entails and to see if it would slot in with my work commitments.

Regards

That is not true. You can specify the affiliations you have with sites on the editor application. Many editors join to list their own site as well as help the directory with editing. Just make sure your main purpose is not to just list your site. Editing in dmoz is a great responsibility. But to those who enjoy it, the project can be very rewarding.

Please see: http://www.dmoz.org/help/become.html

That link will give you more information about how to become an editor and what is involved with the job.

"Guides and Directories" is a hard place to start. The problem is, there are a plethora of "fakes" (that is, ad banner farms calling themselves "directories") and a plague of plagiaries (that is, "guides" copying text right-and-left from Wikipedia, the CIA factbook, or other "guides."

Identifying the sources that (1) have actual knowledge of the place, and (2) have some mission in mind other than maximizing advertising-space-per-pixel is extremely hard, since even the reputable sites rely heavily on advertising.

I'd recommend starting out with some category where primary-source websites are more common, then (when you have a better feel for what a directory SHOULD look like) tackling the cleanup of the directories categories (many of whose sites wouldn't be listed if they were reviewed today).

Hello Hutcheson

I do not rely heavily on advertising, with that said I do have a couple of google ads which helps but primarily my sites are funded totally by myself.

I do have knowledge of the area my sites relate to, because we have visited there for the last 27 years, and my goal is to help others enjoy this location as much as we have.

All the reviews, help, tips come from members who feel the same way, we dont use company's for reviews etc as they can be very one sided, we prefer the honest approach.

Al

Please also note that there are a number of editor actions that can be taken that do not cause the date of last edit to change.

The very brave editors who go into submission pools and weed out the horrible, spammy suggestions do so without ever having the last edited date change, because they are working on unedited suggestions.

In many ways, the editors who undertake this thankless task are some of the real heroes of the directory.

I don't say that there are no good directories--after all, I'm a directory editor myself. I say it's hard to tell the difference between good directories and imitations. So it's better for new editors to start out working ON a directory, rather than working IN directory categories. If you're familiar with an area, then working on its business or society or nature subcategories would be an excellent way to become familiar with that area's footprint on the web, as well as learning to work within the Open Directory standards. (Although I'm primarily not a regional editor, you can probably figure out where my family has been vacationing for the last century, as well as where family members have lived more recently, just by looking at my few regional edits.)
