Change Business category to get listed quicker?

Is there a way to find out the size of the queue for different Business categories? My site was submitted to Business/Small Business/Consulting - showing 68 listings, and no direct editor on April 1, but I was told the queue is very large.
As my site can work in several appropriate categories, is the queue of the following, compared to small biz/consulting, bigger, smaller?
Business/small business/news and media - 107 listings, no direct editor listed
Business/Resources/News and media - 533 listings, no direct editor listed
I am trying to find out if I re-submit into one of these other categories if my chances of getting listed would improve and get reviewed any quicker.
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks in advance, RockLobster

Re: Change Business category to get listed quicker

It really doesn't matter for your purposes how many sites are unreviewed in a category. Suppose for example you find a category where your site gets reviewed in a week. The result of that review will be a move of your site to the most appropriate category to await review again. Net result, one week added to the time it takes to list your site.

Which is why, for your benefit and ours, we advise submitting once to the most appropriate category.

Two exceptions: local interest and multiple languages on the site. If you give an address and have some relevance (a store, hiring, whatever) to a particular locality, submit also to the most appropriate regional category. If your site is in several languages (really, not machine translated) submit to each appropriate World category.

Re: Change Business category to get listed quicker

Thank you, brmehlman.
Is there any way of finding out where I might be in the queue I have submitted to?

I'm not trying to complain, I'm just trying to get an idea when my site could possibly be included. The 68 listings in business/small business/consulting has been about the same number for more than six months as far as I can tell. Would it help to send an email to an editor just above the sub-category to find out more information?
Thanks for the help! RockLobster

I tend to avoid using the word "queue" in this context because there is no requirement or expectation that sites will be reviewed in any particular order. Some editors look at them by date, others pluck the easy ones first. Easy ones are ones submitted to the correct category with good descriptions.

All you can really do is check up on the status of your submission every few months by posting in your original request thread.

As you doubtless know, we advise people to submit to the category that fits their site best.

I rarely edit in Business, and even if you gave us the url of your site, I wouldn't know if you picked the best category or not. However your first post makes me wonder if perhaps there might be a better category for it.

I suggest you take a look at http://dmoz.org/Business/Business_Services/Consulting/ and see if there might be another category which is more specific to the type of work you do. If there is, submit it there, use the company name as a title, and the best guideline compliant description you can - one that will make the editor who looks at it think, "Hey, here's a site that really fits, and the description looks good too!"

Of course that means you have to be careful not to put too many keywords in the description. Try to avoid words that are in any part of the category name.

As a Biz editor, I can tell you that with a well-written description and title, your site will be listed much faster. I've never rejected a submitted site based on the submitted title and description, but I do hold off on them until I get the well-written ones done.

Re: Change Business category to get listed quicker

Thanks for the posts, guys.
I have already asked about submission status, but the gentleman that answered my question was very good at answering quickly - he did say the category for business/smallbusiness/consulting had a long queue.

My site is http://clearviewpublications.com and when submitted on April 1 of this year, I followed the directions for submitting to a "t".

I'm really looking forward to finding out what else I can do to help being listed. If there are corrections I need to make, I will be happy to make them.
Thanks for all of the help,
RockLobster

Well, not really totally nothing.

Go to church often and pray that an editor falls out of the sky and lands in that cat. Picks himself/herself up, dusts off, and proceeds to tackle sites waiting for review.

Or possibly try applying to edit the category! :)

(But be fair.
Don't apply if you are just planning to just add your own site.)
