Changing Listing

Greetings!

I've been trying to update a listing (from one category to another) for the past couple years to no available. The site did originally have content related to the category it is currently in, however over the years, much has changed and it's best fit would be in another category. I see that the category is active (sites come and go) however, for some reason my update requests have been over-looked. I can assure you that the site does "meet" all the requirements for a listing in that category. I've seen several posts that say it typically takes 2 weeks for an update since that is a higher priority for the editors, however, it doesn't make sense to continue to try for this category change since it hasn't happened yet. Anyway, if anyone might be able to offer up any other suggestions, other than submit again, that would be great! Thanks.

If you've been trying to update the site to have it moved to another category for a couple of years and it hasn't been moved, then it would appear that the editor reviewing your request decided the site was appropriate where it was.

If you do suggest a change, resist the urge that so many people have to "improve" the description by stuffing it full of keywords and exclamation points.

Suggest the new category and point to the content that supports the change. the title and description will be handled by the editor.

Actually, I could care less about changing the title and never did in the update request -- the title is the website name. The description is off, since we don't offer those services any longer. Just trying to get in the proper category.

Understand -- history as an editor shows that many legitimate requests for a possible movbe to a differenet cagegory get lost because the person making the request decides to keyword stuff the title and description and the intent of the original request gets losts.

This is crazy....

Not only did I need to jump through hoops to get our site listed originally, and submit several requests over the years for a category change --- now the site is no-where to be found!

Seriously, what's the deal with dmoz?

Actually, I received assistance from a meta editor (years ago from this site) to get listed into a category...there was alot of abuse in that category, and it no longer has an editor.

It is possible (although highly unlikely) that the site is pending review for the new category??

Do you guys offer any assistance with this? So, what now --- wait another 5 years??? Lol.

How unlickely it may sound to you this is most probably what happened.
An editor noticed your request in the "old" category and agreed with the request. He sends the site to the "new" category but he has no editor rights in that "new" category. So the site will be put in the pool of unreviewed sites for that "new" category, but with a marker to indicate that it is send there by an editor. An other editor with rights in the "new" category must now review the site and maybe rewrite the description.

Sorry, waiting is the only option. We can not offer assistance to specific people / sites. That wouldn't be fair against other people / sites.

Sorry, but the dmoz system is flawed...or perhaps perfect, depending on which side of the coin you're on!

If you think of the "system" as being a way of empowering people to work on topics where they've shown some interest and some aptitude, and you see an example of a person performing a useful action, ... then that is obviously not evidence of a flaw. Nor is it evidence of "perfection".

Opinions might differ. But there's nothing in the events you describe that could help inform an honest judgment of the overall quality of the system.

As I mention earlier, there was alot of abuse in the category I was originally listed in. Our site no longer offers those services, so I submitted an update (category change) request.

I'm not going to list any sites, as this isn't the place for that discussion (if you would like to review them privately, then feel free to contact me) however the same set of sites that were removed years ago, are now all listed, plus more sites that are owned by them are listed.

How is it possible that 8+ sites can be listed, removed, then re-listed? How are sites that were registered less than a year ago listed...and ours has been overlooked for years? Since I have nothing else to go by, my only conclusion is that an editor is involved.

Considering dmoz is a commercial entity, and its results are shown on 1000's of other sites worldwide, including the largest search engine, I would expect there to be some accountability....and even stricter guidelines for editors.

There is strict accountability. Every editing action is subject to review by any active editor. There is no review by the general public -- nor should their be.

Violate the policies and an editor is subject to the loss of their editor account.

Any editor who willfully abuses the directory is subject to not only losing their editing account, but their sites and the sites they listed are subject to removal with prejudice.

What more do you want? Chop of their hands? Behead them?

If you don't have any evidence that the listings were the result of abuse, but believe that the sites shouldn't be listed according to our editing guidelines, then please let us know about them the Report Hijacks, Dead Links, Inappropriate ODP Content thread.
