Changing URL

P

Patchworks

We are about to lose our current domain URL in a copywrite dispute and need to have our ODP listing updated with our new Domain URL.

Can anyone tell me how I might do this?

If this is the wrong place to ask, I apologize in advance.

Use the "Update URL" link in the upper right of the apropriate category. You should be aware that processing times can be as long as for new submissions.

Make sure that it is clear that the new sites equals the old one or has moved, so the editor can check that its ok.

It makes the job even easier if the old web site also contains a note explaining what the new URL will be.

Well, right now the old website sets an HTTP error 301 Permantly moved and forwards the user to the new website. I read that was the best way to handle for spiders like Google so they will reindex the new URL with the same page rank and link popularity as the old domain.

Yes, that way is fine as well.

We just need some simple way to verify that the people who really do own the old site, really do own the new site as well.

The concern is the possibility that a hijacker will submit an "update" which is nothing more than an attempt to steal another site's ODP listing.

301 redirects are the best way to go. In theory, our own link checking robot will pick up URLs that are now 301 and flag them, but it doesn't always seem to work - I've only seen it happen once or twice.
