The validation " Please enter the characters in the image below: " simply doesn't work !!!! I have been trying for 45 minutes today to enter the characters below to suggest a site, and am continuoslly told that the wrong characters have been entered. I am not that near sighted !!!!

The purpose of this type of character validation is to eliminate automated entries. The DMOZ suggest a site format was not hospitable to automated programs to begin with, this recent addition is simply absurd .

Unfortunately, yes, there have been some bugs with the validation program. If you enter it wrong once it can get very obnoxious and demand that you re-load the whole page before it accepts a correct code. The tech staff have been made aware of this, and as far as I know they are working on a fix.

It was quite hospitable, apparently. Several thousand spam suggestions from automated submission robots were received every day until the validation thingy was implemented. Some days it was over 10000.

To be clear, if you get the text wrong for a particular image and then use the back button to try again, even if you enter the correct text, it would appear that the system will never accept it.

If you go back to the form, and then hit the refresh button, you'll get a new image and you should be able to get that to work. Some browsers will helpfully keep the data you've entered in the form when you press refresh, but others will make you start again.

As nea says, the relevant people are aware of these issues and working on improvements.
