What has happened?
Quite a integral part of the internet for such a long time. Signed up a site I've run for about 12 years, put it in maybe 10 years back. Really a shock....

Unfortunately we have no further information, and I'm not saying that to be difficult. We really have no further information.
I don't know whether AOL will be making an announcement either. If they do I expect it will be on the day of closure.
Our community is understandably devastated to have lost our hosts and benefactors.

I think we will lose this nice content on internet but this change it can be start new things too.
I hope somebody will be start next DMOZ project (like as Netscape after Firefox) and we can continue work for it.

I assist as a TC (webmasters/websearch/sites), in google-product forums and the webmasters are curious there as well as myself, wondered if any planned efforts are to be made to save/preserve the content. Some of it appears to be in the wayback machine. The amount of data is massive I'm sure and would be quite a undertaking.

Yes, we are in the process of backing everything up, and looking for ways to make it available again.

Is the .rdf backup still current? I have downloaded it and am working to put up a mirror of dmoz at zedurl.com. Are any editors keen to move over to the new site?
I got 100 responses, of which 68% came from former #DMOZ editors.
94% still see value in a directory primarily edited by humans.
Here are the most notably things people would like to contribute:
Editing: 90%
Community Management: 38%
Coding: 27%
(Money: 14%)
All in all, I think we are in good company with our aim to build a new directory.
I would really like to use the momentum and to proceed with the creation of a new human edited directory. If you would like to be part, please follow me on https://curlz.org.
In the free text fields most people mentioned the value of the strong community amongst the editors, while some see this as point of criticism, either, because of barriers of entry.
Another frequent point has been the stickiness to an aged set of guidelines which are seen to not reflect the current state of the web by some.
Overall, many emotions were expressed -- ranging from pride over nostalgia to hope for a new project.
How could this be distilled into the foundations of a follow up project to DMOZ after its sunset in just a few days?
I registered the domain curlz.org and want this to make a playground for a new humanly edited web directory which adapts to the current state of the web.
Please note that all of my initiatives are not more than suggestions for a quick proceeding. To see how far we can get, I added the possibility to create an account which gives you access to an internal forum and a wiki.
I will import the most recent DMOZ RDF dumps within the next days and hope to provide a simple editing interface to play around with.
This is not meant to be a replacement for ongoing discussions in the official DMOZ forums, the resource Zone or the Facebook and Google+ groups. Instead, it is just meant to be a platform to actively and timely discuss a new approach to #OrganizingTheWeb by humans.
Nothing is set in stone! The name, the approach -- everything is up to an open discussion which I am really looking forward to be part of.

You're right, I am trying to convince editors to proceed with something new, because I am passionate about it. However, I do not insist on creating my own thing, I just make suggestions and offer time and effort to build something new.
While I understand that it maybe confusing to have more than one initiative, I would like to see even more, honestly. The sunset of DMOZ is because AOL made the decision. On the other hand, the importance and usage of DMOZ declined unfortunately, so I feel that it is necessary to come up with new ideas answering questions of the modern web. This can be very opinionated and potentially lead to a less "neutral" directory. I would like to see DMOZ as such to continue and I value the initiatives by the admins very much. On the other hand, this could also be the chance to test new approaches to the general idea of human curated collection...
So, what I do is not more than a suggestion, an experiment. I invite anyone to join and discuss and don't want to depreciate the initiatives of the admins, just complement them.
