Confused about submitting to two different categories

Hi,

I'm confused and pretty worried that I'll do something wrong and find a site banned from ODP. So, please tell me how to do the following without upsetting any editor:

The site in question will eventually be out in two different languages: English and Swedish. It has two domains for each language, spelled a bit differently since some users are frequently mistyping the name. Let's say it has xxx.com and xxy.com in English plus xxx.se and xxy.se for the Swedish version.

The two "xxy" domains are pointing straight to the real domain by a simple re-direct.

OK so far, I hope. Now it gets worse:

The English version "xxx.com" is already listed in ODP under Regions and country "A". But this was a strategical decision by the company, which is actually located in Sweden - having just a small branch in country "A".

Now the questions:

1. Can we list the English version "xxx.com" under Regions/Sweden, too, without being considered spammers?
2. Can we list the English "xxx.com" under the Swedish language category, or do we have to wait until we get a Swedish version?
3. Can we submit the extra domains "xxy.com" and "xxy.se" as well?
4. Are ther any other factors or tips I could use to get this straight?

Oh, and one more thing about another site: I can't for my life remember if I have submitted it or not. How can I check if I have?

And yet another Q about a third site: This one is about to be obsolete due a merger the company recently went through. How can I get it out of ODP?

A million thanks for anyone patient enough to read through, understand the mess and post some good replies. If this person is a ODP "representative", it would be great, but any other reply will of course do fine, too.

Cheers,
Dan

It's always easier to give advice if we know the exact URLs and categories involved :)

If there is regional content relevant for Sweden, yes, by all means submit it to Regional/Europe/Sweden/[län]_County/Localities/[kommun]. If the municipality (kommun) doesn't have a subcategory, submit it to Regional/Europe/Sweden/[län]_County/Localities/ .

Don't submit it to World/Svenska until you have a fully working Swedish version of the site. Once you do, you could be eligible for two listings in World/Svenska - one in a "topical" category (such as Ekonomi och näringsliv, or Datorer) and one in the right location under World/Svenska/Regionalt/Europa/Sverige/.

Don't submit any other URLs with variant spellings for the same site. That is considered spamming. We prefer it if we can list the same URL for all language versions (just xyz.com rather than xyz.com/swedish.html) but that's not a rule set in stone and may depend on the site.

Hope that helps {moz}

Never submit the xxy domains, we dont list redirects.

As a general rule, no. Normally a multinational company would be listed in the Regional branch (if at all) at the lowest geographical level encompassing all physical locations (note this will be based on information on the site, and also be more than just an address) if Sweden and Country A are both in Europe then there would normally be a single listing at Europe level. There are so many other factors that could lead to different outcomes that its impossible to guess without specifics. But that is the most common outcome.

Questions:
1. possibly
2. yes, but the content in Swedish must be readily available from the .com address to be listed in World/Svenska/
3. no (see above)
4. yes - put the content all on one url, with an obvious language selector. That way we can list the same url in all relevant categories. What you do with the other urls is up to you.
I can't for my life remember if I have submitted it or not. How can I check if I have?
Submit again to the single most appropriate category, write down the category and date, and ask in the submission status forum a minimum of one month after that. It is very rare we can tell if a site is waiting without being provided with a link to the category.
How can I get it out of ODP?
When the site is decommissioned, either place a redirect or notice on the old url and then use the 'Update listing' link from the category it is listed in to advise that the site has been retired, or take the site offline and wait for our automated link checker to mark it as dead. (I recommend the update method personally) Note: requesting removal of a working site will not be actioned without onsite confirmation.

Nea, Gimmster,

Thanks both for advice! Really appreciiated and needed.
No, I didn't want to make people able to identify the client, so no URL. Sorry, but hope you understand.
I'll now print out your replies and post on the wall beside me.

Cheers,
Dan
