Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this request for information, but ...
I noticed in my logs something called DataFountain DMOZ downloader - can someone help me know what this is?

No idea.

I started spending some prime time with Google on this when I thought "Biogs.com should be doing this"

I was getting nowhere with my own searches and thought somebody might know off the top of their head

Dimensional Insight announced that DataFountain, its latest generation of Web-based data analysis products, now includes the industry's first fully functional Java applets.

I appreciate your following it up. I'm not sure that I'm much the wiser! But at least it makes me feel like there's nothing much to worry about. It's just strange that it had the words DMOZ downloader.
