The same way any web surfer does. It's a question of common sense.

The question sounds as if dmoz.org doesn't list commercial sites - we do, as long as there is sufficient unique content. Again, common sense and a bit of experience.

AFAIK, AOL owns TMZ, any possible renaming is at rumour level... :)

A more direct question might be, "What is the difference between a search engine (Google) and a directory (dmoz)?"

The way I think of the two ... a search engine indexes and presents things according to keywords the user types in a search box. A directory is a hierarchical tree where the user "picks" what he's looking for.

DMOZ / ODP: Original directory, owned by AOL, updated and managed directly by thousands of volunteer editors.

Google Directory: A copy of the ODP (under the terms of the Open Directory License), owned by Google, hasn't been updated recently and is now more than a year out of date.

To answer you question a bit more simply put: Google is simply displaying a copy of the DMOZ, and their copy is old.

Google Directory is based on ODP data. It was updated Aug 18, 2007.
Five days is not very old. ;)

It's not old, but it's not up to date either. It should mirror the data, but it doesn't.

I guess Google have never claimed to mirror the data on dmoz.org. All users of ODP data should get that data from the RDF dumps that are provided. That means that all users of ODP data have a version that is not as up to date as the data on dmoz.org .

Sheeesh! How "up to date" do you want? :)

"Present" is constantly in process of becoming "past." As soon as anything is updated, it is already out of date. Five days? Five minutes? Live feed?
