Directory submission: good or bad?

Hello Friends

I am new to this field of seo. I have been given 5 sites by my boss to improve the ranking in google. i Have optimized my pages and going to start link popularity? I have read that directory submissions are banned by google and by doing excess of directory submissions google banns our site.

Friends so should I go directory submissions If yes on how many directory sites i should submit my sites.
