It seems that the descirption used to describe my site over at DMOZ.org is showing as the description for my site in the Google.

Old description in google has disappeared.

Is that normal?

If you're talking about the Google directory, then yes it is normal since they use our data. If you're talking about Google's search engine, then the standard "we're not Google" answer applies.

I have noticed that in the last week that listings on Google's search engine are alternating between the website's usual description and the DMOZ listing and are switching back and forth on a daily basis.

Over the last week or so several people on various forums have reported seeing ODP descriptions in Google SERPs. I spotted one myself today.

This is not exactly new. For years it was standard practice for Google search results to show the directory description for sites listed in its directory (which has always been a copy of the ODP.) That went along with a link to the directory category beneath the result.

Then on 29 March 2004 Google rolled out a new interface without the directory tab. At the same time Google removed the directory descriptions and the links to its directory from its English-language search results.

Since the links to the directory have not returned, it is more difficult to see exactly what is going on now.
