Just wondering, are we able to find out the DMOZ editor of a particular category ? If so, how ?

Look at the bottom. If no editor name is given, look into the higher categiries until you find one. [Apart from this editors a lot of editors are able to edit the whole directory, so "abandoned" categries have someone to take care of them]

For example http://ch.dmoz.org/World/Deutsch/Computer/ has the listed editors "ikoch" and "windharp"

If you are thinking of contacting an editor with regards to your submission, I wouldn't bother looking up an editors details. This forum was created for "site submission statuses" and the like and many editors have had their "hands burnt" by corresponding with submitters via email so you are unlikely to get a reply if you do contact them directly.

By "hands burnt", I mean things like personal attacks, mail/spam bombs, server attacks etc - all for just not listing somebody's website! Volunteers shouldn't have to endeaur conditions like that, therefore it is recommended to new editors that they do not respond to editor feedback unless they _really_ want to!

Thanks for the info, harp.

As for hurling abuse at the editors, that person got to find better things to do with his life.

It is the other information that would be useful to know.

For one, it would be good to know profile of the editor of the category that I am intending to submit to, email addresses irregardless but his trade, his interest etc. There no need to be secretive about these infos since the ones submitting are also bareing some of these infos (if not more) in the first place.

I would feel rather uncomfortable if the editor of the category I am submitting to is in the same trade as me, in the same country as mine which doesn't have much geographical distances, and if it is taking longer than usual to get reviewed.

But then again, there isn't much one can do about that is there ?

There's no need to divulge them to submitters, either, and, in fact, many legitimate reasons not to divulge them. Not all editors put that kind of information on their profile page anyway and, unless they do, you have no idea what they do or where they are. If you have nothing to hide, then you shouldn't even be concerned that the named editor of a category might be in the same trade or country as you.

As for "longer than usual", review times can be anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of years so how do you determine "usual"?

Finally, as someone else said, there are an awful lot of editors who can edit anywhere in the directory who could be the ones reviewing sites in the category you submit to, even if there is a named editor in the category. Are you going to inspect the profiles and/or email every editor who could touch your site?

The above are the assumptions that you made, not me. You probably didn't read me the following ;

"email addresses irregardless but his trade, his interest etc. "

Huh ?? "couple of years"??? As a user, is that what I should be expecting from sites using ODP data. Isn't it a problem that should be addressed ?

Because of a shortage of editors, some cats have queues that are backlogged up to 2 years. As for addressing the problem, the only way that could be done is to find some way of recruiting new, qualified editors. Not so easy.

Well, I wish I could help but I have applied twice but been rejected in two different categories.

I wish I could help but rejection is painful and resistance to apply again grows with each.

Enthusiasm is a criteria I have but I'm just not good enough to be an editor. Sigh..

Well, we are sometimes even have problems with submitters phoning editors. Many experienced editors removed all personal information from their profile as a result.
My own ODP mail address that I never used for anything else but ODP communication, that I never entered on any public page, now receives about 5 spam mails each day.

I was rejected the first time, too. Next time I read the advices for new editors, choosed a smaller category and it worked.

Easiest way to get in typically is pick a small, neglected cat in some non-spammy area of the ODP, and submit an application which is perfect in terms of guidelines compliance, etc.

Thanks everyone for their guidance.

I just realised after browsing through the suggested neglected categories and discovered that I have no knowledge in any of those areas.:( Would give it a try though.

That's exactly what I am doing now.

Thanks for the advise.
