Hi. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how long it takes before a newly listed site to appear in the site search index? Thanks.

That depends on technical issues. Normally the database is updated once a week, but it might be several months from time to time.
ODP search is mainly used by editors anyway, most users look at copies made by our downstream data users like Google.

I thought maybe dmoz search index affected googles directory..

I'm waiting for my link to appear in Googles directory after being listed here, and though it may have something to do with indexing the dmoz site...

So how often does Google update it's version of the dmoz index? Or more importantly, how often does dmoz update its own directory? Are the two linked (i.e. search function and categories update at the same time)?

The search.dmoz.org database is updated no more often than once a week. (It's supposed to be every week, but if there's an error in the RDF dump, then the search database doesn't update.)

You'll have to ask Google how often then update the google directory, or how often they spider dmoz.org, but the latter is probably more often than we update our search database.

...and a category is updated every time somebody makes an edit in it - but that update happens on the editor-side server, and it can take a few days for the public-side server cluster to catch up.
