Hi,

Hope this is the right place to post this :)

It seems that Dmoz has some serious problems with the search function.

If you try to make a search, you get a time out, and "cannot find server".

I have tried the last few days, but same result every time.

Right now, it is working, on the public side, for me...

Very strange... No matter what I do I got time out from the CGI..

Tried with bot IE and Mozilla from 2 different computers.

I can imagine a few possible situatuons:

1) A problem somewhere between you and the ODP server. In that case i should solve itself eventually.

2) You using an IP that was used for spamlike access to our search server in which case he AOL operating staff might have choosen to block it. In case you are using some kind of dynamic IP this should solve itself at some point.

3) In case you tried a somehow unusual search phrase you might try something more common (like an english word)

4) One or more of our collection of search servers being unresponsive. You are assigned one by random, so doing a shift-reload would often do the trick.

Thanks for your reply.

I decided to run some tests, since I still have the problem.

I tried to connect using a anonymously proxy - and could make a search!

- So no doubt it must have something to do with your suggestion number 2!

After I started to think what I have been doing the last week since my IP seems to me blocked.

I really seems like the search function is very sensitive! - The only thing I did was to run some searches to See if i was listed. (Used IBP).

- As far as I can see the only thing IBP does is to make a simple search request and wait some seconds.

Is there any way I can contact the AOL staff to get off their list?

- I contacted my ISP, and if I should change my IP address, I would have to unplug my router and wait for 3 days! - NO WAY! :)

IBP -- an automatic search generator?

Yes, I can certainly see any search engine site admin going to a great deal of trouble to block something like that.

IBP = Internet Business Promoter (www.axandra.com).

Its very strange... the software does contact the different search engines to see if your site is listed - but not in any aggressive way.

So if someone know who I can contact to be white listed I would be happy
:)

OK, so there´s no "DMOZ Search problems" ;) - it´s probably a problem with the way that software behave.

I guess you could contact: staff @dmoz.org or use the feedback form at: http:// dmoz.org/cgi-bin/feedback.cgi?

If you mean the Internet Business Promoter (IBP) product I wouldn't be surprised if it was being blocked. A local firm that ran a small business directory had someone run it against their site and ended up blocking it and its user from access due to excessive automated access/spam by the program.
