Just thinking out loud... Out of all the editors on here is any not a really good programer that could improve the dmoz search, or is it issues with hardware or the extreemly large size of the database? :)

More of an issue about focus.

Editors build and prune the directory. Not public-facing tools to search it.

But licensed user of the directory data can add whatever features they wish.

Google have added a nice search feature to their licensed copy of the ODP data, as have Gigablast.

Though Google in particular is often working with a copy of the data that is several months old.

Out of the many hundreds of licensed users of the ODP, it's surprising that so few have added a search feature as it is an often-requested feature.

Why not ask a few more and see what they are capable of?

What do you see to be in need of improvement?

Several bugs in the system were ironed out a few months ago.

You should know that the search function is there to help you find appropriate categories, and you then browse the categories to see all the relevant sites.

If the search were to return a list of all the relevant sites then there would be no need to have the directory there at all, would there?

I assume you are aware that the search is only updated a couple of times per month - it therefore usually lags the directory content by a few weeks.
