It's usually every week or so but there have been a few technical issues recently. I can't confidently predict when these will be resolved

Thanks for the offer but that won't be possible. The software is owned and maintained by AOL. Their technical staf is working on the problem and from what I have read it is a major overhaul. Please be patient.
BTW The problem is not in the search itself but in the RDF, the file used to distribute our data.

Couldn't agree more. Guess it won't matter with a month or two, but there is also the problem that if it isn't updated, it will also do worse as a important variable in google's search relevancy tests, and therefore be less relevant in googles search algorithms. And to be honest, the relevancy there is quite a big part of DMOZ relevancy...
There are several completely different issues:
1) When ODP search is updated. That supposedly happens once in a good week, and zero times in a bad week. That affects the "search" box at dmoz.org, but has no effect on Google at all.
2) When Google DIRECTORY is updated. That supposedly happens once in a good month, if there is no problem with the RDF that the ODP generates.
3) Google SEARCH doesn't update in a batch. It spiders dmoz.org AND directory.google.org on a regular (maybe daily) basis, and reflects changes almost immediately after that. It doesn't even know about ODP search, and it doesn't know about ANY directory updates, it just checks individual pages on a very regular basis.
There's an article by Jean Manco at http://jean.manco.googlepages.com/googleanddmoz -- if you're interested in clearly understanding the concept rather than knowing what happened yesterday afternoon, it's still recommended.

Thanks, I really enjoyed the read, interesting to read someone that seems to know a bit about what actuall happens instead of passing urban legend. Still doesn't invalidate my theory (urban legend? ) that the main link juice comes from google directory itself, and therefore the export of the files matter.
Actually just saw that something is happening with the search, but it seems like (at the moment at least) it only works up to approx world/Denmark and then the rest of the world category is not indexed.

I expect that AOL's operational staff are experimenting. We humble editors aren't privy to the details of what they're up to .
The RDF will be fixed when it's fixed. Is the exact state of progress important to you?

Instead of trying it yourself every day I would advise to check here atmost once a week, better only once every 2 weeks. When the problem is solved I am sure one of the editors will post a message.

It doesn't matter for DMOZ. We totaly do not care about links juice or whatever else webmasters think is important for promoting their website. These things is not what DMOZ is about and if anything might happen in this field as a result of a DMOZ listing it is just a nice bonus.
