Dear Editor,

I am making a case study on DMOZ listings. What does this mean?

1. I want to measure submission - to - approval time.
2. What are the challenges one faces to get listed on DMOZ?
3. Is there a way to have quick listing / quick review by DMOZ for having the site approved and listed in the directory?
4. Do one has to really followup on the forum to get their site listed in DMOZ?
5. Does listing depends on the categorization of master list services or just a particular services?

Do ask me questions if you have any on the above 5 points.

The case study that I am doing is on my website <URL removed> >> I will update the status here as an when I get feedback from DMOZ / Resource One Editors:

11-May-2012 | IST 1 PM:
I submitted my site today with the following details:
Title: <site title removed>
Description: Offers digital marketing services using search engines, social websites, portals, ad networks, affiliates, email and mobile. Includes company profile, service information, clients and contact details.
Email: <email removed>

Destination URL: <dmoz.org category submitted to removed>

Next update as per DMOZ polices, I am hoping to get all the issues resolved in 2 weeks time. I am giving a deadline to myself of 25-May-2012 so that I can do everything correctly as per DMOZ polices to get my site listed in DMOZ Directory.

I hope to get wonderful response from DMOZ to make sure we give a very healthy case study to the industry.

I wish myself "All the very best"

Yours sincerely,
--
Ryan

Feel free to measure anything you want. DMOZ does not measure such things so we can not give you an answer on this point.

2. What are the challenges one faces to get listed on DMOZ?
The only thing you have to do is to fill in the form after reading the guidelines.

3. Is there a way to have quick listing / quick review by DMOZ for having the site approved and listed in the directory?
No there is no quick listing option.

4. Do one has to really followup on the forum to get their site listed in DMOZ?
Certainly not. Whatever you write will no effect at all on the review proces, the time between suggestion and review or on the outcome.

5. Does listing depends on the categorization of master list services or just a particular services?
If I would have understood the question I might have answered it. But I do not understand the question.

Why do you think a site will be reviewed within 2 weeks. There is once sentence on the suggest a website pages but it is " it may take several weeks or more before your submission is reviewed". There is no guarentee of time at all.

BTW providing a link to a website is not allowed. One of the forum admins will remove it.

Dear pvgool,

Thank you for your quick response. Below are my replies.

1. I want to measure submission - to - approval time.

@solidradicle sure. I want to measure how good a person who submits his site can be. Also I want to be accountable on what I do on DMOZ.

2. What are the challenges one faces to get listed on DMOZ?

@solidradicle. Very true.

3. Is there a way to have quick listing / quick review by DMOZ for having the site approved and listed in the directory?
No there is no quick listing option.
@solidradicle this is good. This makes DMOZ a holistic place on the web.

4. Do one has to really followup on the forum to get their site listed in DMOZ?
Certainly not. Whatever you write will no effect at all on the review proces, the time between suggestion and review or on the outcome.
@solidradicle this is even better. I am sure there are many sites and few editors.

5. Does listing depends on the categorization of master list services or just a particular services?
If I would have understood the question I might have answered it. But I do not understand the question.
@solidradicle here is an example: If a company offer social media marketing and if there is no category in DMOZ for it can one submit the site in Internet marketing. Because I could see sites that are only in pay per click services and still be in internet marketing. Let me know if my example help you to understand the question.

@solidradicle Actually I differ, what you are saying / what written in the policy is different from what I saw on the "thank you" page after submission. It stated "2 weeks or several months". Yes even I agree, on understanding the list of websites that must be in the queue is high so "no guarantee" on time is ok unless it doesn't become unknown.

@solidradicle This is fine. But I thought case study should not be anonymous and considered an spam.

Thank you very much

You misread the final acceptance screen which isn't talking about elapsed time to acceptance/decline at all. It actually says
Once your site has been accepted into the Open Directory, it may take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months for your site to be listed on partner sites which use the Open Directory data

You might have misunderstood our objectives and how we operate here. ODP is a volunteer organisation building a directory as a hobby. Editors edit where they wish, when they wish and as much as they wish within the constraints of their permissions. We have no schedules or systems to force people to do work that they don't volunteer to do. ODP is not primarily a free listing service for website owners and it does not attempt to process their listing suggestions within the time scales desired by them.

There are around 400,000,000 websites that we haven't yet evaluated and only several thousand volunteers to process them in their free time, in the areas that interest them and as other priorities permit. It's going to be a very long job and we don't believe that websites that have been suggested to us are somehow more worthy of a listing than those that haven't. In some popular/spammy categories, the opposite is true.

Do what the submission guidelines that you agreed tell you to do and simply suggest your website once to the one best category. That's it. There's nothing else for you to do. You've already done that so there's nothing more to discuss here.

I understood the message correctly and I am fine with that as I know about DMOZ for more 14yrs. Also I don't consider DMOZ as a directory listing sites. If you look at my 5 questions it was to just build a case study. It will never happen if my listing is not approved.

No one questions DMOZ. But people can analyse DMOZ and no-one can take that from an individual. Do correct me if I am wrong.

Have a healthy life.

Thanks,
Ryan

To answer each of your questions in turn:
Don't know
Don't know
Don't know
Even if I did know, I wouldn't tell you because this forum has a strong policy of not answering status requests. It says so in the sticky These threads are NOT for Submission Status! thread at the top of the page.

Please re-read my previous answer to you.

Yes. But ...... the policy not to answer status request is a wanted policy. Maybe not wanted by you but certainly wanted by us, the DMOZ editors.

That you don't like my answers doesn't make them or me dishonest.

We have other policies here too - which include the prohibition of personal insults. You're suspended for a month.
