Re: Does being listed on yahoo help speed listing

First, in most categories the ODP is larger, so in general we don't expect all legit sites to be listed in Yahoo: and second, when Yahoo went pay-to-list, the ODP community's impression is that they got, um, considerably more tolerant of what WE still called "sites devoid of unique relevant content."
[The latter may be slightly unfair (just as the periodic public accusations that "all DMOZ editors are corrupt" is perhaps premature), but in short, Yahoo is not considered a useful or reliable guide to what specific sites the ODP ought to list.]

But in practice it's very unusual that an ODP editor would even look at Yahoo when reviewing a site from outside.

This should not be taken as a criticism of Yahoo in general. It is without dispute still the second-best general internet directory, and still the most comprehensive in some categories. (Google's deal to get THEIR database dump for their spider was a very good thing IMO.) But their goals and guidelines are their own, and ours are different.

Re: Does being listed on yahoo help speed listing

I read somewhere that spam prone categories take longer to be listed on.

Since the category I wish to submit is spam prone, should I go through all the websites in the category and identify the spammers. What I mean by spammers are the people who do the cloaking or affiliate linking as mentioned at this webaddress: http://dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html

YES. That would be a very useful thing to do. Then simply email your findings to a meta and they can try fixing the problem.

Thanks!

(Please note that although this would be a helpful thing to do, it will not necessarily affect the speed at which your submission is accepted.)

Re: Does being listed on yahoo help speed listing

Speed in spammy areas is decreased by these things:

1) Lots of unreviewed delivered per time
2) Editors loosing fun in diggind the few good sites out and turning to work in other parts
3) It can be very time-consuming to proove that a site is spam
4) New editors are in most times not accepted for editing there, since we think it needs a lot of exp o judge those sites correctly. So the editors editing there should have done some work somewhere else in de ODP

All those result in large stacks of unreviewed entries, that has few to nothing to do wirh the listed ones. Apart from that noone (inside ODP ) is angry about spam-reports

Be sure you read the ODP-guisdelines about spam before checking the sites

The more detail you can provide, the better. Gather convincing evidence, and present it in a clear manner.

The best way to be noticed in a spammy category is to submit a very clean, factual (boring to some folk!) description. Some editors scan a huge list of unreviewed for titles and descriptions that conform properly to the guidelines, since it is likely that the site will be easy to review and list quickly.
