No preference is given to the ending of a url. However, if the same website ends in .com and .co and .us (or whatever), we will determine which is the original (main/primary) site and list that one only.

Many thanks IMocr

Does that mean if one site is approved by the local Life boat and another one not it would be down to the editor of the category should I then advise them to get all the domain variations or is there an appeal process if the site listed was not there approved one they have a national site but its down to local lifeboat stations to do there own

There is nothing at all about an ODP listing that would be easier if you owned all the domain variations.

There is no appeal process if a site is not listed. The issue simply doesn't come up often enough to be a major concern.

What if I start a site say domain.com and then decided to come up with flavour for different countries like UK and France and started sites like domain.co.uk or domain.fr?
Which site will you register? Or will you add all the sites to index?

With regards,
Mandar Thosar

Don't confuse "website" and "domain". Some people put multiple websites on the same domain. (We deal with it.) Some people (like you describe) spread a single website out over multiple domains.

It shouldn't matter, we just list the websites, not each domain.

Sometimes it does matter: suppose we can't determine which of several fraternal-mirror sites is the real home. In such a case, for any of several different reasons, we might well adjudge it best to list none of the sites: especially if there are other indications of deception or of "gaming the system."

If the content is substantially the same, only the main domain would be listed, and it would be up to you whether or not you linked to the others from that site.
If you provide complete translations (eg the whole site in French, not just a machine translation) on other domains, they may be suitable for listing under that language (ie under http://dmoz.org/World/ ).

Just some additional information - there is no "heirarchy" among top level domains, and thus no "upper level" or "lower level". Any precedence attached is solely one of personal perceptions and those fed by marketing initiatives.

There are what is known as generic (gTLD) such as com, net, org, info, etc and country code (ccTLD) such as ca, us, ws, tv, fr, uk, au, etc. None have any sort of "precedence" over the other, either in ODP or in the field of networking.

Moreover, we don't really care whether the sites we list have their own domain name or not. We're perfectly happy to list sites with useful content that are hosted on Geocities, Yahoo, AOL, or any other free ISP hosting.

I agree with you Chaos,... i`ve just joined this forum because i`ve just got into submitting sites,... I was in the Canary Islands for the holidays and found a great web site. Me and a friend where talking about how can it be that people don`t know where to look at to get their information before travelling, in this case. I think websites such as this one are great to get in touch with brilliant people and share information that may be use full for others.

Hope to be more in touch with you guys,... BYE!!!
