Earlier today I submitted a request for my site www.mission2go.com
on the site status forum.

While I wait for a reply, could someone tell me what the difference is between
meta, editor, editall, and catmv by your names? Just want to better understand where your all coming from as I peruse the forums.

Thanks

Rob

A simplified answer:

An editor can only edit in certain assigned categories.

An editall can edit in any category

A catmv can do more fancy stuff, like moving categories around, anywhere, and rename categories.

A Meta can do just about anything including removing other editors.

Thanks, one more question

Thanks for the info!

One more question, sorry if I should be asking it on the site status forum.

When I checked back on my post, I noticed that some status questions posted after mine were answered right away while mine has not. Looking through older posts I noticed some have been there for several days without an answer. Does an editor for the specific submission category need to check the forum before an answer is posted?

Thanks again

Rob

Yes, but editalls can edit in ANY specific submission category. We try to let editors answer what they can and will, and catch the others before they scroll too far. Sometimes we miss some questions. If your status question scrolls off the second screen without an answer, please bump it!

More on Permission Levels

Oh ya, only mention the bad stuff.

Metas review editor applications, from new editors wanting to join, and from current editors asking for new categories. We also have a hand in creating ODP guidelines and policy, policing the directory for abuse, mediating this forum, mentoring editors (of all levels, not just new), mediating and resolving conflicts, leading the community in projects including category reorganizations (though any editor can do that), and assisting staff in figuring out who should recieve promotions of the editall/catmv/catmod/meta type.

Missing from the list of permissions are:

CatEditall - editors who have Editall/Catmv like permissions in one (or two) specific tree(s) or language(s). (eg. Top/Regional or Top/World/Korean)

Catmod - editors who have Meta-like permissions in one (or two) specific tree(s) or language(s).

There are also versions of these permissions for editors in the Kids_and_Teens branch, they have a "k" in front as in: keditall/catmv, kmeta, and kcatmod.

The ranking (and possible promotion paths) of the permission levels is as follows:

  • Cateditall > Catmod > Meta
  • Cateditall > Editall/Catmv > Meta
  • Catmod > Meta
  • Editall > Editall/Catmv > Meta
  • Editall/Catmv > Meta
"Root" or staff is above all of those and is only obtainable if you are on AOL's payroll.

(the same hold true for "k" permissions)

I think enarra meant in part of her post that metas also moderate this forum rather than mediate it. BTW, enarra is an awesome mentor, a great editor, as well as a dedicated meta - just in case anyone wanted to know (from her #1 fan).
