Editors that haven't updated in years?

I've seen a lot of categories ran by editors that haven't bothered updating in years. Yet, no other new editors are allowed to apply for these categories because that position is already filled?

It seems like that's a big problem that can be fixed fairly easily to me.

Incorrect. Lots of categories have two or more editors.

If it's a problem, and I don't believe that it is, how would you fairly easily solve it?

On the categories that have one editor and haven't been updated in a few years, there is no link or button to "Become an Editor" of that given category. I could be just missing it, but I feel like a lot of people are being locked out because of that reason.

The button at the bottom of the page only appears if there are no listed editors for that category at the moment. That's not the only place on the page where a link to apply can be found, though. If the category is open for new editor applications, you'll see a "become an editor" link in the list of links at the top right of the page. (If there is no "become an editor" link at the top right of a category page, then the category isn't open to new editors, regardless of whether or not there is a listed editor there right now.)

We don't join new editors into large or spammy categories. That's why applications for them are disabled. It's a damage limitation thing. Once new editors can show that they know what they are doing, they can request further/wider permissions.

We have just under 7000 editors here to look after around a million categories. In practice, most of the work here is done by more senior editors with wide permissions.

So what was your fairly easy fix exactly :)?

You could, of course, offer to be part of the solution.

That does clear things up tremendously. It also makes sense. I was just a bit confused because I felt like it was a dead end. I would certainly love to be part of the solution as well.

You sound like you are very interested in helping out the ODP. There is no better time than right now to sign up as a new editor. :)
