If you're asking what DMOZ would stand for if DMOZ were an acronym, well, technically it's not an acronym. It comes about because in the early days the directory existed at http://directory.mozilla.org (in fact, you'll notice that that URL still mirrors dmoz.org). When they decided to give the directory its own domain, they just took the "d" from directory and "moz" from mozilla and came up with dmoz.org.

But it doesn't really mean anything.

If you're asking something else, well, I don't know what you're asking then so you'll have to clarify. ;)

Additionally - DMOZ aka ODP, where ODP is the Open Directory Project.

From the folklore that I have read:
The first name was GNUHoo
Then NewHoo
Then netscape aquired it and changed it to ODP.
Site was hosted on directory.mozilla.org
That proved to be to long for people to type so it was shortened to DMOZ.org

So the story goes.

Well... Not exactly. Have a look at DMOZ - Wikipedia for a bit of history.

(This redirects to the german version for me, but the google cache convinces me that this is only the WikiPedia trying to fool me because I am a german reader...)
