Ghost link from the DMOZ?

Hello, :)

I have a web statistic program on my server that shows all of the activity on my server in regards to my domain name. Along with Google, MSN, Yahoo and others, it shows that dmoz.org also has a direct link to my site and I would assume this would be my listing in the ODP. However, I have searched the ODP for my domain name but the search comes up empty. The reason I ask is that if I am already listed, I would not want to submit again.

Kind regards,

Gary Crocker

It likely means that an editor visited your site for some reason. You can't deduce anything at all from that.

If your site is going to be listed, it'll happen when it happens :) .

Hi Jim,

Okay, thank you for the speedy reply to my question. The following shows a list of search engines that actively link to my site. This is the basis of my inquiry.

<<<Webstats info for...>>>
Links from Internet Search Engines - Full list
- Google (Images) 58 73
- Google 44 44
- Yahoo 36 44
- MSN 22 22
- Ask Jeeves 6 6
- DMOZ 1 1
- Dogpile 1 1
- AOL (fr) 1 1
- AOL 1 1
- AltaVista 1 1
- Excite 0 1

As you can see, it shows that the ODP is linking to my site. In the bottom of the list are the 1/1 links. I did a search on all of those and my domain name turned up on all of them. Only in the ODP does it not appear. Strange, huh?

It seems I have not been listed, , so I will wait as I know that is what I must do.

I agree with you, everything is what it is and things happen when they are supposed to happen. Thanks for taking the time to answer my inquiry.

Cheers,

Gary

That list does not say that the ODP is linking to your site, but that a visitor came to your site with a referrer field pointing back to the ODP. This might be someone clicking a listing in an ODP category, an editor checking your site through the editor interface (for whatever reason) or one of our robots checking if your site is reachable.

I suppose you are new to reading statistics like that? You might want to do some further reading on referrers and you might want to get, look into and understand your logfiles. While those statistics are really convenient to get an overview, they hide a lot of the information contained in the logfiles themselves.

Thank you for your replies. Very helpful people here in the ODP.

I understand your point Bobrat, and I realize that even if my site were added within the last week, it would be some time before it would appear. I already have great position on all major engines without an ODP listing, but I think a listing in the ODP is still very good for any site. It represents an opinion that your site is of good quality with valuable and unique content.

I appreciate the feedback Windharp. I have taken your advice and have spent the day reading up on stats, referrers, and logfiles. Good point, well taken.

Kind regards, :)

To clarify, once a listing is approved it will appear in the category within one to three days. However the DMOZ search is only updated weekly, so there is an additional delay before it shows up when searching.

Ok thanks. I thought it took much longer than that (weeks). Thank you all for your help. My questions have been answered. :)
