In Google's directory I can see sites which are no longer in DMOZ...

Why? :)

Because they did not update their directory.
We (DMOZ) have no control over what other sites are doing with our data.
If you want an answer to your question you will have to ask them (Google)

Hello,

Google is just one of many users of DMOZ's data. They do not update their information as frequently as people would like. So what you see in the google directory may possibly be several months behind what the live directory at http://dmoz.org is showing.

I think google last updated the information in August, but I might be wrong... So any edits to DMOZ since then would not be seen on the google directory.

hi - dmoz incorrectly listed my site a few months ago, (it is now corrected, thanks), but the errors propagated to google (misspelling of "codsall").

do you know who i can contact at google to get it corrected?

it has propagated to several directories but google is the one i am concerned about.

You can contact Google - but I doubt they will do anything just for your site. There are tens of thousands of other sites that need updating since they don't update from ODP often enough to keep their directory up to date.

is it due to the size of the dbase you think they don't update very often, I'm sure it would have more weight if someone from the ODP contacted them than joe-avg off the street :)

Someone could but since the ODP isn't about the Google Directory, why would they? The Google Directory is just one of hundreds of users of our data. It's really not our business how often they update.

Incorrectly Listed

Hi,

Was the misspelling part of the domain name? If so, buy the domain with the spelling wrong and have it re-directed to the correct one. That way, you don't miss anyone.

Or is it just that you don't want the misspelling because people will think you don't pay attention to detail?

Either way, I understand. How frustrating!

Since this thread began the Google Directory has updated from the Open Directory five times:

on October 18th 2004.
on November 14th 2004.
on or before December 17th 2004.
on or before January 18th 2005.
on or before March 5th 2005.

As it takes time to collect and roll out the data at both ends, the Google Directory is always behind the Open Directory. For example the last Google update represents the state of the Open Directory in mid February.

We are not Yahoo or Google, these forums are for help with dmoz.org.

Google is a user of ODP data, so you can suggest a site to dmoz.org for inclusion and if accepted it would get picked up by Google when they next downloaded the data. In order to do so, you need to visit dmoz.org, and find the single best category for the site in question and click the "Suggest URL" link at the top of the category.

I suggest you visit the Help Center Link in my signature first to understand the process before begining though.

I think you can suggest sites to the Yahoo Directory but you will have to visit them for instructions on how to do it.

Don't agree. Its Really not The Big G fault .You can't say if the site is in Google Directory then not really necessary that it should be in Dmoz. Those sites could be in any other Googlebotable Directory.

You can improve your google SERP's results no matter you are in D or in other Ooz (directories)

DMOZ is not 100% for The Big G. Dmoz can't full-fill the Big G hunger.

Our impression is that Google updates the ODP about once a month...but some months, the update fails for some reason.

(What reason? We don't know; not our problem. Will it be fixed? It always has been before. By whom? Either ODP or Google techs, not by editors. Is there anything ODP editors can do about it? No. Do the appropriate techs know? They usually do. Is there any way to notify anyone? No.)

All our regular licensees are out of date. For that matter, our own public pages are out of date -- only the editors are sorta-guaranteed to see the latest: absolutely guaranteed only if they actually edit the category.

Is this a problem? No, it's the nature of directories that there's a long lag time. So directories "favor large, stable sites." For instance, we don't list single-item-for-sale or single-product-intro-promo websites -- because by the time our licensees (whoever they are, whenever that is) update, those websites are likely to be gone. And we don't list individual breaking-news stories (although we do list some archived stories). And so on.

We take the long view. Do you want short view? check out eBay, the New York Times, ABC, MLS, and the like.

Hutcheson:

When you say that Google updates their directory USUALLY on a monthly basis, or at least USUALLY every few months, does that mean that they do a complete update of the entire DMOZ directory?
What I mean, is that I see portions of the Google directory that tells me the last time they cached the page was back in July '04.
Is the cached date USUALLY the same as the last update date?
Since you don't work at the Googleplex I'm not sure if you'll have the answers, but just maybe....

Thanks,

Midgetlov

No idea. We don't control Google and the way they update their directory.
